groove tubes in JSX?

hi everybody

I have a JSX head, and i want to know if it 's a good idea to put inside Groove tube instead of the original one.
Can i hear the difference?Do you think that Joe has changed his one?
I have seen that we can put inside EL34s or 6L6GSs(i don't know the difference between the both...)

excuse me for my bad english....

Thanks a lot

Re: groove tubes in JSX?

Hi, groove tubes wont really give you a different sound. the way I understand it is that groove tubes buy a LOT of tubes and then test them, they only select the tubes that fall within a certain response range to put their name on.

the clever bit is that when you replace groove tubes with more groove tubes they are (or supposed to) sound the same as your previous set of groove tubes because they fall into the same test parameters.
otherwise replacing tubes will give you a slightly different sound between sets.

Re: groove tubes in JSX?

I have had Groove Tubes in my Carvin for a while. I have Electro Harmonix in my JSX and Svetlana "winged - C" in my Rivera. Theyre all EL34. I've switched them around in different configurations.

I prefer the Svetlana in the Rivera for the way they perform in the clean channel. They remain crisp and clear with the guitar volume rolled down. Dig in and they get warm and start to sing.

I keep the EH in my JSX for exactly the opposite reason. The clean channel stays clean and crisp, all the way up to 7 or 8, if you care to play that loud. I keep the crunch channel gain on 3 or 4 for rock rhythm power chords. Roll down the guitar volume and you can control the distortion to just barely dirty. If you prefer the clean channel to remain crystal clear, I'd stick with the EH EL34 or their milspec equivalent 6CA7.

The Groove Tubes remain in the Carvin for now. They're probably Sovtek EL34, but I'm not 100% sure. It's a sterile sounding amp with them in there. If not for the fact that it's my #3 backup amp. I'd put Svetlanas in there.

Groove tubes are just overpriced, re-branded Sovteks, Chinese, J/J, or EH tubes, matched to their "standards". You'd do better buying the original makers of the tubes from a reputable seller, I.E. Eurotubes, Thetubestore.com, etc.
