Heavy Metal Pedal?
i have a carvin v3 head hooked up to a carvin 4x12 loaded with g12t-75s. i dont know if i suck at equing or the fact that i need to get a heavy distortion pedal. i like the kind of tone with a nice chugging noise (wich i cant seem to get) for palm mutes. but i also want that high pitched hardcore sound. i play everything from metal, hardcore and i enjoy playing classic rock. but i cant find that hardcore tone. if someone can recommend a pedal or give me a hint on equing it would be much appreicated.
o and my tone is kinda muffled, but it all depends on where im standing. is this the acoustics of the room, or something else? o and i have a crappy stock speaker cable (came with v3) do you think i should get spend the money and get a good one? would that make my tone better?

Re: Heavy Metal Pedal?
I would maybe bumps the mids up a little bit for some more growl.
A lot of the chugging sound is in technique (palm muting correctly, for example).
A speaker cable would certainly help, but I doubt that it's at the center of your problems.

Re: Heavy Metal Pedal?
I found that you don't need as much gain as you think you do to get the chug. Don't ignore the treble and presence knobs. I found that treble is essential to getting a good thick chunk. Also it's good to work on your palm muting technique to get a great chunky sound.
Waylay might be right about the mid-range thing, but I have always found that
too
much midrange in a rhythm chunk channel takes away the aggressiveness of the sound. I'm not saying scoop it like backhoe. Just, in my experience the more midrange I use the more round and smooth the sound becomes. This si great for solos and other thing but in my opinion when dialing in a metal rhythm tone I use the mid sparingly. I would leave it around 12 o'clock but not too much. But then again I've never played a V3 so take this advice with a grain of salt.
Just keep EQing and trying things and I'm sure you'll get it. I don't think you need a pedal. Not with an amp like that, you just need time. Maybe a new speaker cable.

IMO, you need to have the speakers hitting your face in order to dial in your tone.. its not very realistic to dial it in with the sound hitting your a$$ or knees. if you go with that logic, you will be destroying ears when you play live. this idea may solve the muffled issue

True, a lot of players dial their tone in when they aren't in a good location to haer the speakers projection. If you're ever around a halfstack live and walk around it, closer and further the sound changes dramatically. So try what shogun says.

Re: Heavy Metal Pedal?
I kind of had a "wow" experience this monday when I was cleaning my room. I decided to change a few things, so I put my amp (Peavey Classic 30) on a chair instead of having it on the floor, and the difference is HUGE.
I don't think I'm ever gonna put an amp on the floor again.

Re: Heavy Metal Pedal?
Put the gain up on full on the highest gain channel and put the volume at about half way. The V3 can get high gain sounds from what I've heard and have been told.
As far as pedals go, all you would need is a level booster, or really any pedal that has a "level" setting on it. Put all the other settings on 0 and put the level setting higher to have the pedal push the amp to higher gain. I do this with a Peavey amp I have and a TS9 and it works wonders.

I agree with this 100%. If you back the gain off you will instantly hear the chug. That may not be the sole cause of the problem, but I'm sure it's a big part. I hate that overly saturated sound where you lose the silence between each note because the distortion amplifies the resonance of the guitar between notes.
