Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
Im in a search for my perfect amp. My fav tones are sort of a mix between Satch's (most notably on the "Is there love in space?" album) and a bit of Gilbert's shrederiffic edge (most notably on the songs "Superheroes" and "Technical Difficulties", of course). Im stuck between some Laney (GH50L, GH100L, or VH100R), the
Peavey JSX
(yes I know Ive said I hated it when I tried it out, but I lately found out that I was only cranking the gain each channel, not each channel's volume...I was aware of only a master volume knob) and the Carvin V3. Im also thinking of maybe a
Marshall TSL
, and possibly a Traynor YCS100. To describe my tone in my words, it is "sweet and singing but raunchy and thick enough". I like to be able to control its raunchiness by vibrato and pick attack, and clean up when I roll off the volume. I use a JS1000 and an Avatar 2x12 with V30s. I like my tone to be able to have a nice heaviness, like Gilbert's tone on "Dead Man's shoes" and Satch's "Up in Flames." Those rythm tones RULE. For lead, I really cant describe an example, except what I said up there ^ about the sweet singingness and all that. I would like 3 channels, all tube of course, and I would like to able to play it with parents in my house at 12 at night without waking my parents, which is a big deal. I play more small gigs/practice rather than bigger gigs. But I want to have enough power for a gig at a football stadium or something haha. Thanks guys!

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
I'd say get a modeling pedal..... you can go straight into a PA or use headphones for those late night bedroom concerts. Maybe something on the cheaper side to start with, like a Korg AX1500G or AX3000G..... then you can program it to sound anyway you like, just a thought.

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
IC hit it right on the head.
You want a loud amp that isn't too loud that sounds like a bunch of amps based on Marshalls.
Personally, and this is just the way some fat guy on the internet does it, but I like a good 1 Channel amp with pedals.
Are you playing any football stadiums in the near future? If so is it American Football, or Futbol?

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
The closest I've come to this is basically ... Tonelab, Boss GE-7 eq, TS-808 pedal, into a solidstate PA/Keyboard amp with eq and full range speakers.
I want to add a Low Wattage (1/2watt)
Tube amp
in front of the Tonelab. Of course I need to convert the signal to line level. But, I have a plan for that.

x2 I run a Carvin Master Tube Series MTS3212 combo which has a 50/100 switch and then a Line6 Uber Metal pedal and Boss ME50 for effects in front of the clean channel..
I have the Uber set up for brutal distortion but if I back off the volume it cleans it up to more of a AC/DC crunch..
Alot also has to do with pickups that same kick you in the jaw distortion will smooth out when in my
neck pickup
with a little delay..
I once thought I had to have a rack full of gear, and 20 guitars but I have narrowed down to the basic of basics..
One 7 String RG7421
One 6 String Proline PL650
One
Distortion Pedal
Line 6 Uber Metal
One Effects Unit Boss ME50
One Amp Carvin MTS3212
I can conjour up a ton of tones with just switching options on the guitars, playing with the volume and tone controls on the guitars..

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
theres 2 options
1. get a modelling amp which has so many amp types that you just described
or
2. buy all the amps u just describe and a multichannel A/B switch so you can switch between...and ofcourse you need the $$$$
lol...good luck

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
I can think of a couple options, but can't really meet the volume requirements (buy a 1x12 15watt practice combo maybe?)...
Old Marshall
or....

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
Im in highschool, so by football stadiums I mean a high school one. I just recently played a gig there, and thats about as big as Im gonna get. Mostly small clubs. Can anyone get me background info on the Laney GH100L and GH50L? By "one channel with footswitchable gain" Im guessing that they mean one channel that is either clean, and you can footswitch it to gain, so its basiclly 2 channels sort of, with a shared EQ? Im confused. And no, I hate distortion pedals. I refuse to use a distortion pedal. They sound WAAY too artificial.

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
Oh ok let me straighten this out for you guys, cuz I guess it seems like I want LOTS of tones...no sirree!
Im looking for "MY TONE!" I mentioned a bunch of tones, and my idea is if you put those in a blender, itd be my tone. So let me describe this without any references to another guitarist's tone...
Clean- sparkly, beautiful, balanced. I generally use it with a
coil tap
, and usually a chorus or flanger or phaser. I like it to be lush.
Rythm- Chunky and fat, but not mushy. I like it to be tight and crisp. Yeah I know, tight and fat at the same time. I want to use it for slightly lower gain leads, and both this and the lead I want to respond well to pick attack, changes in vibrato and my guitar's volume knob.
Lead- Higher gain than the Rythm, but I dont want it to be over the top. Its gotta be a controled chaos, really. Sweet or screaming, depending on my vibrato and pick attack, and again I want it to clean up when I roll down my guitar's volume knob. I like the bottom to be tight enough, but a bit of "flab" so that it isnt dry. Dry and wet at the same time, sort of. I like the mids to be juicy, and my highs to be screaming but not peiricing.
Im guessing that the JSX is my best bet, after describing this. Thanks so far for your help guys!

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
Hey there smitty.
Have you looked at the
Genz Benz
El Diablo line-up?
I have an El Diablo 60 Combo and it screams.
I play through an Ibanez JS1200 (with Dimarzio Fred & PAF Joe pickups) and a modded RG1570 (with Dimarzio Evo2, Fast Track 1 and
PAF Pro pickups
). The Evo2 sounds real heavy through this amp. The JS1200 sings!
There are so many tones in this amp. Such a versatile beast!
Explosive chunk and soaring solos. Has a terrific clean channel. Very stompbox friendly.
As with most tube amps, sounds best when cranked. I use a Hotplate Attenuator for lower volume settings though, so no problems there.
Check out the Guitar Player review at...
http://www.guitarplayer.com/story.asp?storyCode=4741
Most importantly, ignore the sound clips at the Genz Benz website. These clips don't even come close to the actual sound of the El Diablo. Just go check it out!

Re: Help me find my perfect amp! PLEASE!
Get the JSX. you won't be disappointed. It's amazing how you can clean your sound by just rolling the volume on your guitar, which is pretty cool IMO.
