HI-FI instead of AMP??? :)

I was at my friends place yesterday and brought my boss gx700 to try to compare it to a new boss gt8 he just bought....but thats not in the focus in this thread...The point is...my friend doesn't have a guitar amp-so he uses his sony hi-fi stereo instead...so, we plugged my boss gx700 in it first, and WOW!!! The sound i usually use - the distortion(actually called VINTAGE OVERDRIVE)+some preamp settings - (although it was good anyway) WAS PERFECT-MY DREAM SOUND-THE BEST SOUND I EVER HEARD, AND EVER WANTED TO ACHIEVE!!! It's tigh, with just enough gain..great for soloing...great for riffs...JUST PERFECT!!!
So now...i am thinking of getting an HI-FI amp instead, but with enough power to handle for playing in a band...maybe some hi-fi power amp with speakers with enough power (that way i will also be able to achieve beautifull stereo!!!)..
And, anyway..I have never actually owned a good guitar amp..i am having some tube Teisco 40w...and using Peavey tnt 150w bass amp...and at the rehersals i use marshall jcm with 4x12...but sound was never as good as i mentioned..
BTW my guitar is RG550ex...but this was achieved with his rg470 with evolutions..i will go there again today to check what's it like with stock pickups on mine..maybe i will have to go with the evolutions..but well'see...
So, what do you think about this...? Any similar experiences of using guitar processor directly through hi-fi...?
My only fear is that maybe this is only some kind of coincidence with this particular model of Sony HI-Fi stereo my friend has..so i have to try it in more HI-FIs to check it out...
I am anxious to check this and your oppinnions out...?

I'm also anxious to see people's opinions, whilst I keep mine to myself.

get some good monitors and bring that thing to life.

I actually run my podxt thru a set of monitors I made but I am a amateur loudspeaker maker so I had some tricks up my sleeve

I made a pair of horn loaded cabs loaded each with 2 7" Aluminum woofers and tweet and the pod sounds fan-fricking-tastic..

but...

I also run thru the effects return of my old school fender acoustisonic. Which features 2 8's and a tweet

I usually run this way at home. But use a PA amp and PA speakers for live use - home gear won't take the abuse.

Re: HI-FI instead of AMP??? :)

I haven't had a real amp in a long time. Even when I had one I still ended up using my Boss VF-1 (and previously my friends GX-700) through my studio monitors or through my hi-fi stereo system. This may sound strange right now, seeing that I sold my studio monitors I'm either going through headphones(through my Mackie mixing console), my hi-fi(rarely now cause the thing is kinda screwed up) or my TV(yes... you heard right.. my TV).

Tone wise it really depends on your hi-fi system. Comparing the tone I got out of my studio monitors and my hi-fi system, the hi fi system sounded VERY different from my monitors as the monitors were flat response and most hi-fi systems (unless you spent $200k on a Lucas Arts sound system) color the sound you hear so the sound you got from your friends hi-fi may not be the same on yours.

You're right that it'll sound different on different systems, but ALL speakers color the sound in some way. Monitors are supposed to be flat, but it only takes a minute comparing various models to shoot that ideal down. They sound very different, and can't ALL be flat!

Some "hi-fi" speakers add some "boom & sizzle", for sure. But some do not, and actually do as well for monitoring as some speakers marketed as such (NHT, B&W, and many others are like this). You don't need to spend $200k - B&W makes some nice ones for $500/pr...

Re: HI-FI instead of AMP??? :)

I've got my Digitech GSP2101 hooked up to my stereo (a high-end early 90s Philips DFA888, with matching speakers) but I hardly use it as such, because it sounds so much better through the power section of my Marshall JCM900. Truth is, I've used my Hifi as a PA, it's that powerful.

But it does work, especially on more processed settings where the transparency of the Hifi set, combined with the 2101's output amp simulation, will give a great spatial stereo sound. I still feel that a proper stereo tube poweramp would be the best of both worlds.
