Re: Highest Gain Amp?
most players including vai and many shredders and metal bands actually don't play with rediculously high gain. most high gain amps also sound better NOT with the
gain knob
up full and that's how they're designed..
just food for thought....

Very good advice Mr Ki.
High gain eventually becomes indistinguishable from fuzz. Okay, if you wanna plat Sepultura stuff that might be fine, but if you actually listen to players with great tone (and I'm not saying you have to be in love with their playing, just their tone), such as SRV,
Angus Young
,
Robben Ford
, Chris Duarte, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and so on, none of them use enormously high gain - they just play REALLY LOUD.
I don't know if anyone else here shares this view, but I still think EVH's tone was superb on the first few albums when he used an old Marshall Plexi, but got progressively thinner and buzzier as he switched to the 5150s.
I use a Mesa Boogie TriAxis/Stereo 2:90 - I don't play metal, but the highest gain channels (Lead 1&2 Red) are unuseable for me, and the other lead channels just sound ridiculously over the top with the gain set anywhere over 3.5 - but with lower gain settings and serious volume, a Les Paul or PRS through this amp is just an absolutely cooking sound.
So, back to you - what do you actually need the highest gain amp on the market for?

Re: Highest Gain Amp?
I dunno how many gain stages the 5150 III has, but the original(now renamed 6505) has 6, and was the highest at the time. For most the gain knob is unusable above 6-7.
BTW, Sepultura's tone on Arise rules.

Finally, somebody who acknowledges Sepultura! Derrick Green sucks, but when they had Cavalera, they ruled so hard.
If I had to suggest a
high gain amp
, it'd probably be a
Bogner Uberschall
.
