Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

Well I seems like Jemsite has spoken! I'll leave the guitar in blighty and take some books.

I actually really like sunbathing - we picked the Maldives as neither of us has had a day off work for over a year and we just need to relax.

.....

What about a Ukulele?

Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

There's a Steinberger Synapse (non TransScale) with your name on it....

Took mine on honeymoon to Mauritius (although I will admit it didn't get played all that often), no hassles with airports, airlines or wife. She's very forgiving that way

Edit: PLUS - what an outstanding little guitar that is. It's logged plenty of mileage already and it's lived up to all the manufacturer's claims.

Another edit: Just looked at the brochure - on second thoughts, forget the guitar, even if you do hate diving.

See! I'm not the only crazy person here.

How did you find Mauritius? That was on our shortlist (along with the Seychelles) but the Maldives seemed even quieter and more chilled out.

Lovely place. We were there in March, which is taking a bit of a chance with the weather, but only had one day of rain and one overcast in the 10 days we were there. Hellish humid though, especially after sunset.

Very expensive - if you do travel there, most of the hotels offer some form of top up package which covers soft drinks, beers and local spirits (Rhum in other words - it's lethal ). Make sure you take it - a coke will set you back around GBP6 and hard tack is outrageous.

Very interesting culture, with a very short occupation by the Dutch, who left after an enormous typhoon, with the French coming in about 20 years afterwards, being booted off by the Royal Navy and the island being a British protectorate for the next 150 years. Although British control lasted longest, the culture is predominantly French, as are most of the tourists outside of the winter months. Industries are sugar, tourism and the rag trade in that order. Highest concentration of 5-star hotels per square mile in the world. The geography is pretty much volcanic, nothing active for eons (so no black sand beaches), incredibly lush. We thought the locals were absolutely fatastic, really friendly. Crime's more or less restricted to getting your pocket picked at the Central Market. Be prepared to haggle.

Have a great honeymoon SB!

Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

Dude. What you fail to forget is that they [wives] are all good with it now but wait a few years and if you take the guitar with you now it will only come back to haunt you.

My wife used to 'like' me a few years ago. Now I'm too scared to play guitar at home let alone on a island in paradise!

Good luck and best wishes for the wedding.

We've been together 5 years already now, and she's still into the whole guitar thing.
I fact only a few weeks ago she was practically egging me on to buy my new Suhr, cause she said it looked sexy.

Maybe things will start to go South once we are actually wed, but hopefully not!

Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

Whether she likes the guitar or not, you will likely score major points putting the typical honeymoon activities first. Unless she's begging you to bring a guitar, leave it at home. Even in good marriages, it never hurts to have a few brownie points saved up for leverage
My wife doesn't mind my guitar habits, or the spending after almost 4 years of marriage and 10+ together, but that doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate it when I put the guitar down and do some dishes (ruining the precious calluses). Take the recommended books and just relax. If you need the music fix, take a theory book or autobiography as has been recommended (good for the plane if nothing else). Otherwise, you picked it to relax, so relax

Ha, I figured out how to wash dishes almost one handed due to this issue!

Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

2 weeks is a LOOOONG time for a honeymoon. really.

i'd cut it shorter & leave the guitar home. trust me on all accounts. besides two weeks without the guitar will bolster your creativity & break you out of practice ruts.

good luck, but you'll need much more than luck ...glen

Obviously as a thankyou for all her patience I want to take a guitar with me to play on our honeymoon.

We are going to the Maldives so it will be a pretty much lie around doing nothing type break for two weeks. Yes I know there are other things that you should generally be doing whilst on honeymoon, let's take that as a given. Rather than take a big pile of books to fill in the gaps between the other stuff, I want to take a guitar and work on my chops.

However I've no experience of taking guitars on planes, so I'm after a bit of advice.

My options as I see it:

Take my acoustic: I have no special attachment to it, it's just a £250 Takamine. The problem with this is that it is too large to take on as carry on so I will have to risk it in the checked in baggage.

Buy a folding travel guitar: This would likely be small enough to carry on, but I've no experience with them. Are they any good?

Buy a really cheap acoustic/electric: One that would not bother me in the slightest if it got smashed to bits by baggage handlers. Guthrie Govan has gone on record saying that 5 mins spent practising on a really bad acoustic with an egg slicer action is worth 2 hrs on a shred machine, so maybe this is an option.

Any advice folks???

Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

I'm getting married next March. Trust me bro; leave the guitar at home! Even if she say's it's okay; leave it at home!!!
Believe me, I love the guitar! LOVE IT! I play for hours at a time! I think of that next piece of gear! I'm writing my next song in my head at present. I'm right there with you.
As much as you love guitar...
...leave it at home, my friend!!!
Trust me!
Congrats too, btw!

Re: Honeymoon Dilemma

It's your honeymoon... So I'm not to sure what to say.

This year I took my RG550 with me to France. My GF asked me if I would because she knows how much I like my guitars. (New GF) (Who doesn't care about guitars or music)

The five years before that, I didn't. ("Old" GF) (Who would've killed for neon Jems and loved my ENGL amp)

So I think it really depends on who your going with, and what the plans are.
