yeah, i've heard that.

certainly for the size places i end up playing, my fender hotrod deluxe does the job.

i imagine playing a stadium or something i would need a bigger amp...

i think that was the point of a few posts was that when the gigs are big enough, you won't need a bigger amp since you will get miced anyway. i have used my 1x12 Reverb Deluxe that is only 22wtts at shows for thousands of people and it worked great. i would rather have the "looks" and the air behind me being moved with a stack but then the sound guy screams at you to turn it down anyway. as long as i get my sound, i can get controllable feedback and can hear myself i'm happy.

Alex Lifeson had a single 12" speaker isolated off stage but ran stacks (unloaded) on stage many times just for looks as did MANY other performers in the past and the present.

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

I say it really depends on what the gig is, how long the set is, how big the stage is...lots of factors come into play with what I take.

If we're doing a real short set in the middle of a bill or it's one we've jumped on and it's not really 'our' crowd, I'll just take 2 Genz Benz cabs and my rack with two guitars...

If I'm doing a regular gig, I'll take six Genz Benz 2x12's and my road rack...still two guitars though... I never really need more than that.
My Wolfgang with the dTuna really helps me go from drop d to standard on the fly, so that eliminates extra guitars for different tunings...the other is just a backup.

Here's a pic of my latest rack:

...and here's all my Genz Benz 2x12 cabs...

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

In larger places we bring in two 2x18 subs, two 1x15 main cabs and three monitors. In the road case we have a power amp for each sub and one for the mains, some signal processing and a 24 (I think) channel board. Snakes and cables. We have a lighting rig, but fortunately the venues we need lights at have their own rigs already set up.

Smaller venues we eliminate the subs and sometimes just use the mains with only one monitor for the singer.

We have setup and break down down to a science. Everything is pre-wired, so all we have to do is run the cables - it takes less than 20 minutes to bring it in and a hour until we sound check. So we arrive at about 8:00 and we're ready to play by 9:30.

I personally bring my Mesa and a cab to bigger places and I just picked up a combo for the smaller venues. I have been bringing three guitars, but it has been a hassle, so I am considering only bringing two, and not even breaking both of them out. I also decided yesterday that I don't need FX processing, so no pedals or racks any more. It's a cover band and I am not Vai.

Yeah the stacks and lights and five guitars (our crowd doesn't care about our guitars, only other guitarists and we think they do) look cool, but when you're half ****ed at 2:00am it's best to have minimal work to do!

Practice setting up everything within a 15-minute timeframe. If it takes you half an hour to 40 minutes to set up and break down, you won't be invited back, no matter how much you rocked

We all know your guitar amp can kick ass above the house sound system in most small clubs. Ok, cool. Take a bow; we're all applauding your power, man. But for Pete's sake, get it out of your system in your practice space!
He goes on to tell you how to adjust the volume level on your guitar amp and telling the singers how to sing.
Not all sound guys have a bad attitude like this guy but some do. I think that they resent the fact that your on stage and they are not.

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

I have gotten along with every professional sound man I have ever worked with but the amateurs and wannabe frustrated musician types are the ones I have issues with.

I learned the importance of a good sound man early on and always get a good laugh at the attitudes of alot of beginning bands when they have the chance to have a pro run their sound, "I need my amp on 11 to get my sound and why am I not coming out of the mains?"

The people that don't have their sh*t together in the first place are usually the ones that have the biggest issues with the sound man and they don't bother to drop their (fragile) egos long enough to learn what they are required to do to get a good mix in the first place. I see original bands running three and four deep in the local rock club and most are very laughable at how inexperienced they are but act like total premadonnas when it comes to getting a good mix.

My favorite compliments at the end of a show aren't from fans but the pros running our sound
We always pay the sound man the same as the band members if he/she is a pro and knows what they are doing.

Most of the ones I've had to work with are not very profesional unfortunately. They don't realy care about what they are doing. To work with a REAL pro sound guy would be cool.

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

I've been fortunate to play some big shows opening for major bands. Part of the writer for big bands is a pro sound crew and a wall of sound as well as food and drinks
Last year when we opened for Charlie Daniels (on his B-day), we played on a 100ft stage that was 6ft off the ground with a wall of sound and 5 pro sound and light men. I actually had one of them use our digital recorder and record the show as well as having friends get a ton of pics.

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

Of all the national openers and regional touring bands we've played with, I've never seen a guitar player use more than a combo, or a 1x12 extension cab. There is simply no need for anything bigger. 4x12's are for garage band practice.
