It was a pretty cool show. Nice bunch of guys in his band. That was the second time I opened for him. We play original/cover southern rock and classic stuff and not country for the record

I saw a band that was outfited with new Mesa Triple Recs and new PRSs that couldn't play any better than a garage band of high school kids. They spent most of the show complaining about the sound man being the problem

Par for the course.

On the other end of the spectrum, I played a set at a local club and was told not to bring an amp as one would be supplied. I get there and the "supplied amp" was a little 1x12 Crate tube combo. There was no footswitch to change clean to dirty and the dirty definitely left something to be desired but I played like I was playing thru a wall of stacks and still gave the show a 110%. I guess I did alright as the lead player from Blackfoot (Charlie Hargrett - who actually owned the Crate combo) came up afterwords and shook my hand and complimented me on my playing. Charlie wanted to hang out and talk shop with me like an equal which felt cool to be considered on par with a known pro.

I use a half stack. Not for volume, but because it has wheels.Wheels are good!

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

I kept it simple this past weekend just to see what it felt like. I dug it!

My setup was:

PRS & Strat - Boss TU2 tuner - RMC 3 wah - Bogner Shiva 12" Combo.

Worked GREAT and sounded incredible!

I'll probably hang onto my pedalboard and stuff, but I think that that stuff will only make it out to really large gigs or whenever I'm feeling particularly frisky.

I'll be playing out again soon. I keep it pretty simple.

Kustom '72 Coupe 212
Two or Three guitars
Pedalboard consisting of a wah, delay, flanger, tube screamer, and the amp switches.

I don't think there is anything wrong with bringing a big amp. I use a 45 watt tube combo myself but a stack is cool too. No you don't "need" a big stack but if you like how it sounds, and you don't mind dragging it around then more power to you.

When I was backstage at Maroon 5 concert, the one guitar player had a Marshall half stack turned around backwards turned up probably all the way. Out the back of the stage was deafening. But his tone ruled.

Cool, I saw a guy do that in a bar once. He had a full Marshal stack turned around backwards and a nice selection of Gibsons on stage. It also sounded excellent.

Bass goes direct. We also use 6 wedge monitors on stage. We will need to upgrade to a 24 channel board soon. The 550 is now a backup to my Jackson Dragon.

I'm running all four 4-12" Marshall cabinets now: 2 from the JCM900 head and 2 from the AVT150 head for cleans (although only micing one of each). I'm using an A/B switch set on both and dialing in the clean with the overdrive - you get the roar and yet hear every single note in a chord from the clean side. We have a full-time soundman and are currently looking for a lightman.

allen n heath make some nice sounding boards..
isnt 4 cabs a bit overkill for that size of room.. i wouldnt even use that on an outdoor event

Re: How much gear do you take to your shows?

I bring the basics: guitar, backup guitar, amp, switches, pedals, cords, etc. A few things in the old "gig bag" to keep me going: strings, extra cords, etc.

Now, the band, on the other hand, has mucho gearo (our bass player owns the sound and lights and he likes to put on a good show): We have PA mains and subs, monitors (4), drum triggers. Our fog machine has been replaced with a haze machine (hangs a little longer and doesn't make you cough) and just got 8 new light cans that are made with LEDs so you get like 1.4 million colors....

We live close by the venue we usually play, so it's no big deal to set up and tear down that day/night.....
