how's my floyd? - is this normal?

I just recently got an ESP equipped with a Licensed Floyd Rose. So the first thing i*did when i got home was go check out Vai's lessons on trem tricks() at vai.com. i found out that when i "do the bar"(my slang for vibrating really fast) very low, low enough for the G string to touch the bridge pickup (one of the tricks, btw), all my strings go way outta tune. now, i'm pretty sure the unit was never intended for this kind of abuse, but since i've never had a floyd before, should this be happening? Is the factory setup to blame here? it works just fine until I bring the bar real low.

If i have to set it up myself, would it be same as setting up an Edge/Lo-pro?
btw, just how low can i go before the springs break?

Follow Jemsite instructions and try.
As far as I know there's much difference between an original Floyd and its copies.
And, of course, none of them (original included) aren't comparable with Edge/Lo-Pros. Watch out for an Edge and put it on!

OR:

the guitar is too new. Let use it for a while, and let woods find their habits before abusing.
One more thing: get the guitar a GOOD set of strings and stretch them many times before to give the nut pads a GOOD clamp.

read thru the Guitars - TECH SETUP area on jemsite regarding keeping a tremolo in-tune. This tremolo should be able to handle staying in tune nicely, once setup properly. Floating trems have a learning curve and once they're reached, should be hassle-free... glen

how's my floyd?

Thanks guys, I'm going to the tech section now

How should my springs be? Mine form this pattern:

* * * **[bridge]
*\ \* * *| | * * / /
* \ \* * | | * */ /
* *\ \ * | | * / /
* **\ \* | | */ /
* ** \ \*| | / /
* * * * *[neck]

...you get the idea

straight springs make more sense but this will NOT cause tuning problems like you're having... glen

ok, I shifted the springs *so they're parallel. At least that was the idea, 'cause now all the springs are a bit off, none of them are parallel. One of them is at an angle of 3-4 degrees. What do I do now? My trem angle is off too, but I can fix that

The screws that hold the springs in place can be loosened or tightened to adjust the anfle of the trem.

I agree with Nuno, "break in" your strings before you lock the nut pads. Hope this helps.

ok, here is a scan:

as you can see, the top spring catches wood

the spring is touching the wood? photos tough to see. hence the tuning problems.

you can redrill the claw, rasing it off the back of the body, to leave more clearance.

easier yet would be to get a wood chisel and gently chisel the wood where the spring it rubbing... glen

try adjusting your monitor brightness if it's tough to see.

If I do what you're suggesting, will it work? I mean if the springs each point in different directions, there are differences in tension in different parts of the trem. Am I making sense?

Wouldn't it make more sense to just put the all teh springs together in the middle (not skip spaces)? Or just put it back the way it was?

no, it's just paint in the middle. I'm sure they never rubbed in the middle as there's over 1cm clearance vertically between the springs and the wood.

ok, that explains why the springs were in a V formation. put them back and read the TECH SETUP area to proceed... glen
