I'm so impressed

So I want to preface this by saying FOR THE price and in my opinion.

Last night I went to practice with my band; and in Japan, since amps are rediculously expensive and also hard to carry for the average train taking person, I played through a JC-120. I use a VOX Bulldog Distortion as my only distortion and I put it throught the 120 and I must say that it sounded great. It was my first experience with a 120 and I must say that it was louder than most stacks I have played through. And it stays clean forever if you want it to.

My set up was much better sounding to me that our singers use of a Marshall JCM2000 last night. I used to own a Single Rectifier half stack and I loved it and it was great, but I must admit that if I had to do it again right now I would probably get a great tube distortion pedal and a JC-120. I love my VOX, it only lacks the all out death metal sound, but hey, it was only about $140. That being said I wounder what a damage controll pedal or a comparable one would sound like. It's not that it would sound better, but the price-tone ratio is so much more in favor of a poor guy. It honestly sounded pro to my ears.

JC-120 with my VOX for vintage to modern rock tones: 8 out of 10
for metal: 7 out of 10

A Recto half stack: 9.5 out of 10

price difference about $1000.

To me that is difficult to look past, plus the 120s clean is much better than most tube stacks.
I'm thinking of getting another drive thing to push it that extra bit more. Any thoughts, if you care to comment at all that is?

I think it sounds like a great idea! If it works well then you should use it to its fullest.

Re: I'm so impressed

I'm currently using a 80's JC-120 and it does sound sweet. I've got a ME-50 unit but I prefer just running some pedals before the amp. My favourite settings recently have been some reverb, compression and maybe a little dirt from my ZW-44. But it sounds teriffic with my strat. For cleans, JC-120's kill many more expensive amps. And yeah, ear-bleedingly loud. My amp is in rough shape though - it needs a good set-up though. The jacks are all sketch and the bass control doesn't work on the clean channel. Neither do any of the built-in effects. I guess rough shape would be an understatement.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with JC-120's. A lot of professional players use them in the studio. So, if you enjoy the sound it gives you, more power to you! If you're looking for a new distortion pedal to give you the metal sound you're looking for, try a tonebone or perhaps one of those new Seymour duncan pedals.

Yeah I'm thinking my next pedal purchase will be a Voodoo labs Sparkle Drive. I've read a lot of good things about them, and it could just be the sound I'm looking for . . .

Yup. I played through a Duncan amp like that about 20 years ago. You could take the tubes out and move them around for different sounds. For the money, it was a great little amp.

I'm not talking about amps in that post I'm talking about pedals and originally how impressed i was with a JC-120. Did you even read that stuff?

Are you just hijacking this thread or something?

Re: I'm so impressed

Sorry. A lot of pros use EQ's to boost the signal and get the sound they want. Duncan makes great pedals. Alex Lifeson from Rush uses the Roland stuff. He uses the JC-120 a lot. it's a great clean amp with the best Chrous.
Jazz players like it also. You might want to try the Boss Over Drive.
