In search of a Chorus Pedal

So, I was messing around writing some stuff this weekend in my gear box software through my line 6 toneport. I had a certain sound in my head and was having trouble getting it out through the mix with reverb and delay settings. Then, I accidentally enabled Line 6's generic "Sine Chorus" effect and all of a sudden there it was - the subtle extra effect on the guitar that I had heard in my head.

Since I do not have a chorus pedal, now I am in search of one. What I am not 100% sure about is what chorus pedal line 6 models their "sine chorus" after. I have always heard great things about electro harmonix's "small clone" model and I have heard mixed feelings on the Boss CH-1 (some say it is too digital and non-organic).

Anyone have any suggestions? I mainly want one that is going to provide a very smooth, warm sound that isnt overbearing. Maybe later tonight I can upload something using the effect in gear box to give you an idea.

Thanks in advance!

Re: In search of a Chorus Pedal

I like the chorus effects in the Line 6 MM-4, but I've only been able to get a decent sound when placing it in the effects loop of my Rivera combo.

For a straight up single pedal, try the Boss CE-5 chorus ensemble or a Voodoo Lab analog chorus. The Voodoo Lab is modeled after the older Boss CE-1 from the '70s.

Re: In search of a Chorus Pedal

I dont have a TON of chorus experience. I am usually not a fan of the effect, even from 99% of the settings on my Visual Sound H2O. I don't ever use chorus on my POD XTLive either but I DO really like the chorus on my Moen Shakey Jimmy. They don't make them anymore but you can find them for pretty cheap on ****. It is worth checking out.

Re: In search of a Chorus Pedal

Well, best two choruses I've ever tested are Voodoo Labs Analog Chorus and Visual Sound H2O, they sound amazing, really lush and full, both of them have sort of a volume boost when engaged, your overall volume will definitely increase when the effect is on. As far as those two, I find the Analog Chorus as a great modulation effect but with a different vibe other than a plain chorus, if you want those typical chorus sounds I wouldn't go for that one, on the other hand if you want a modulation that is plain beautifull and enhances your guitar tone and sound, get that one hehe. As far as the H2O goes I actually have one (the second version they put out, not V2 version though, try to find the older ones, I've tried the new one, didn't like it) and it's amazing, more of a classic chorus sound but LUSH and you can get those watery warbles and vibrato sounds with this one as well, as a matter of fact I don't think I've heard better vibrato with a chorus pedal than this one hahahahaha. Anyway, you'll do fine with either one, and just for you to know I have tested and played an original Boss CE-1, MIJ CE-2, MIJ CE-3, all of the newer Boss models, MXR Stereo Chorus, EH Small Clone...you name it (oh, the advantages of having a close friend that works in a guitar shop and who happens to buy and sell pedals all the time!!!! hehehehe) and this two, as far as I'm concerned, DO sound better

Re: In search of a Chorus Pedal

Rocktron racks to me have the best chorus ever.
I had an intellifex and its chorus was 1.000 times better than g major.
The best chorus I heard till now.
It's not a pedal but intellifex is so cheap these days that it's cheapier than a pedal because of all other effects and it's programable.

Analogman is the best chorus I have recorded with recently. The stereo imaging is awesome on my recent project. Check it out.

Re: In search of a Chorus Pedal

Try the ibanez cs-9 if you have the chance. I had tested one for a few days. One of the warmest choruses I've heard, more open sounding to my ears than the boss ce-5 that I own.

Re: In search of a Chorus Pedal

There are many different chorus units out there and they all sound slightly different. What is "best" kind of depends on what sort of sound you are shooting for.

My favorites are the Rockman Chorus, the Electro Harmonix choruses, and the Line 6 Space Chorus (on "Tri" mode) which was a nice little surprise. I think they're all well represented on YouTube, so definitely give them all a listen.
