Question

Intro to racks 101...help

Hey I'm new to the forum and I'm starting to get intrested in rack unit but sadly i don't have one. I'm thinking of the line 6 pod pro xt to start off with or maybe the tc electronic G-major and a seperate preamp to go with it. Any advice? I'm also think of getting into some basic recording and I have a line 6 guitar portwith a really old version of cakewalk. I have a 50th anniversary strat, rg2570 and s2075. I play through a basic pedal board with wah, a few distortions and delay, hardly use the chorus.

Thanks!!!

I think the Pod xt Pro is a really nice and a really good multieffect if you tweak some. You get a few more stuff with the Pod then you do with the g-major (though that one is a really good multieffect). I don't know so much about the g-major but the Pod xt you can run, correct me if im wrong, five effects at the same time or something like that. Im sure g-major can do that too so nothing special there. You get different distortions and speaker-simulation with pod. I think the g-major has some nice cleaner effects than the Pod but i have only tried it twice or something so yeah. But there is more questions, do you have a good amp? Do you need that distortion and cabinet-simu?
One more thing, i think you should sell that guitar port and buy a basic soundcard. Then you could plug that Pod xt pro into your soundcard and play it like that, i think you can do so. I'm not sure actually... Better sound and i think that is easier than to have everything on the computer.
Good luck with the recording and all!

POD = amp and effects simulator
G-Major = effects unit.

2 different beasts. The pod is like a pre amp and effects unit built into one. It would need a power amp after it.

The G-Major is just a (very good) effects unit and so has no tone shaping or distortion. It needs a pre amp before it, and a power amp after it.

Back OT.
Personally, I wouldn't use a POD for anything other than practising and for quick recordings. Once you know what sort of sounds you like, find the preamp/poweramp combination that suits you best.

I 2nd this, I played a POD XT Pro for 2 hrs in GC, and really did not find the tones I get with tube preamp. The effects were ok but still missing a few I play around with.

find a nice preamp/power amp combo, then find you effects weither its pedals or a rack.

If you put a BBE Sonic Maximizer or a Aphex Aural Exiter after the POD it really brings out the balls and really warms it up to almost tube like saturation and crunch.

Re: Intro to racks 101...help

Thanks guys, but how about live sounds? Which would be better, i don't have an amp but when i play live during the weekends i use a marshall valvestate 100watt amp. I never use the distortion or overdrive on that amp. Oh and I don't have a pc, so it's the guitar port to the laptop. Currently studying overseas. Hehehe, maybe i'll try looking on **** for a 2nd unit. I found a G-major that's just been listed at $0.99. How much should i pay for it?

Thanks again!!
