Is this amp a Fender or a shoebox?

Okay, so my friend's got a Fender Frontman 15G amp (also called FM15G). The thing sounds quite unusual. I've heard complaints about the fact that it is completely enclosed. There is no opening in the back AT ALL.

People have mentioned that if the back is removed it will sound a lot better. Is this true?

If it is a good idea to remove the back panel, there is also the problem of the power plug. It's actually attached to the back of the panel, and the power supply cord plugs in there. Would it be ok to move it somewhere else?

Thanks.

Re: Is this amp a Fender or a shoebox?

I have an amp like that. Took the back off years ago & converted it to halfback. This was just so I could stuff the cord inside it when I was carrying it around. Very, very simple to do. Just unscrew the back, cut it in half, screw it back on. Can't remember if I had to move the plug or not, but it was easy. I can't tell you how it changed the sound. It's just been too long, and I was pretty tonedeaf back than anyway (it was my first amp). I still use the amp on my bench, though. I like its super bright clean. I even bothered to fix it after I blew up the transformer doing something stupid last year.

A Frontman is probably closer to a toaster than a Fender or a shoebox.

So is it worth the effort/risk?

Well, if your amp is anything like mine, there's very little effort, and no risk. Just unscrew the back. If you don't like it, then screw it back on.
