Jazz III picks, wow

i saw a video on youtube of John Petrucci and he mentioned how he uses Jazz III picks. i surfed around and found another video where this guy gives a review on them and says how they allow you to 'maneuver' swiftly because of the pick

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLE_ClnHtO8

after seeing this kind of stuff on them i tried them a while back and i've never looked back to those old tortex picks that i used. man, ive been missing out big time!!! it took me a little while to adjust to them being so small but there great picks.

Try the Ultex ones (the yellow ones), they're the best! Sadly, you can't seem to get them in South Africa

Re: Jazz III picks, wow

I have also made the switch to Jazz IIIs but I use the Eric Johnson ones because of the embossed lettering which help for grip. They have been a night and day change for me. I have also been able to use them very well for lead/rythm and acoustic playing. Great picks. I will have to try the Ultex though. It took me about 15 mins to get used to them, and haven't looked back since, and yes I can't seem to play with the old tortex picks anymore .

cant stand the ultex ones. dont feel good for fast picking, or sweeping. and i dont like the tone. the black jazz 3's are my fav. best tone for my sound, a nice snap when you pick hard. the red are too slippery. i used purple tortex jazz for a while-- they are awesome for sweep picking, but dont have the right tone for my current setup.

... Been a black Jazz III player for the past decade or so until I tried the Ultex version. Tried reds before and meh.
One of my friends happened to "snag" Kirk Hammet's Jazz III pick... in GREEN. Texture's similar to the black one with "more grip" to it.

+1 for the black Jazz III's. Tried the ultex but for some reason they didn't feel right.

Mmmm, black Jazz IIIs.

I made the switch about a month ago and haven't regretted it for a second.

I still use a big ol' Jim Dunlop 1mm Nylon for acoustic though, easier to strum with.

Re: Jazz III picks, wow

Sorry to butt-in on a JazzIII praising thread... but have you guys ever tried to compare them side by side with full size picks (like the tortex ones) and see how much the sound differs?
I agree, they are "faster", but I rather have the nice tone the other picks give me.

Do like Guthrie Govan and use expensive picks! Must be better...

For those of you that like the Jazz IIIs but think they are too small Dunlop makes an "XL" version.

Re: Jazz III picks, wow

I had made the switch to the Jazz III but i couldn't stand the small size of it, so when the XL came out i tried it and never looked back. It is exactly the same as the Jazz III but a full size pick..

I like the (red) Stubby 1.0 but I'll give these a go if I can find them next time in Denmark St...

With the red or black ones, a couple of minutes with an emery board makes all the difference. File the sides to sharpen the tip angle, then refile the edges. They don't have to be sharp enough to shave with, but a relatively keen edge helps.

Or you could pay a premium for the pre-sharpened Eric Johnson version.

Re: Jazz III picks, wow

I've tried them, and I just haven't been able to bond...too sharp, too flex-y. I always feel like I'm getting a lot of drag.

I'm addicted to the Dunlop Jazztone 207's:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Dunlop-J...14-i1176455.gc

I don't use the tip, but one of the shorter back corners. Sweeping is tricky with them, because they do not flex at all, but man, I can trem pick like a mofo! lol!!!
