JMP1?? Chameleon?? ADA MP1??

I've had them all: Marshall JMP-1, Mesa Triaxis, Rocktron Chameleon, Rocktron Vudoo Valve, ADA MP-1&2, and others that I can't even remember now. *I like the Line6 Pod Pro the best. *I have it in a rack with a Mesa 2:90 stereo into a Dual Recto 4x12 Cab. *It is very flexible and Rocks!!! My second choice would be the Triaxis. *I was able to get pretty good sounds out of most of the preamps I had, but I find the POD to give me the sound I really like, and without tweakin' forever to get it.

I have the Rocktron Voodu Valve (just like the Chameleon, except it has a tube to warm the things a bit) and the MP-1 Classic (the same as the MP-1 except it has an extra channel). I also tried the JMP-1.

My opinions? The Voodu Valve is definetely the most versatille. It has tons of gain (think death metal...) and the effects are very good. I control it with the ART X-15 and it rocks. But it has a problem... it doesn't respond very well with my VWH. For example, when i do some palm muting sometimes the sound goes off for a milisecond or something, like it couldn't handle the "power" of the mute (it's kinda hard to explain, really...).

The MP-1 Classic is definetely my fave. It sounds more natural than the Voodu, it's completely analog and has tons of gain too. Hey, it's the pre-amp used by 80's metal bands, so if you are into that sound...

I tried the JMP-1 and it has less gain than any of these two. Don't get me wrong, it has enough gain, but the others have more. I happen to like the Marshall sound, and the JMP-1 nails a lot o Marshall sounds, of course. But i prefer the MP-1. It has that shreed sound that i love.

Triaxis all the way. Nice death metal/speed metal tones can be obtained, and lots of other sounds, so you'll be able to have a wide variety of tones for both your metal and your cover band. This baby has 8 seperate preamp configurations to choose from, so I'd say a triaxis. Oh, and it sounds d*amn
cool too.

Don't knock the POD unless you have really spent some time with it and still don't like it. *Yes it's a modeling preamp, but through a tube power section it totally screams. *Plus, with the scratch you save over a triaxis and all the tubes you won't have to change, you can add to your axe collection or step up to a better power amp/speaker combination.

But it is true that some folks just don't like it, and that's cool too...but give it a fair shake

For the record though, the triaxis is pretty tough to beat, just really expensive.

yeah, I got mine second hand and at a discount, so I was quite lucky. Still have to carry around a chunky transformer as it's a US one to up the mains voltage, but it's worth it... I have never tried a POD, which is why I never comment on them. I have always been a bit dubious about trying to model something, especially after doing a project on it in college (tube modelling using DSP). You can never do it perfectly (and this is due to inherent device characteristic differences in transistors and tubes)but I do believe you can get close though... So untill I have heard one I won't praise or bash it. Although running it through a tube power stage does sound like a good thing!

Bottom line is, try them all out and find the one that strokes your ear and seductively whispers "buy me" the loudest...

.....after spending all afternoon tweakin my Pod Pro/Mesa 2:90/Dual Recto 4x12 I'm a little bummed. *At low to medium volume it sounds wonderful. *Unfortunately, when I turn it up.........and I mean LOUD up, it gets really bright. * It's so bright I can't pull the highs out enough. *I even turned the treble/presence on the preamp all the way down, and the presence on the power amp down. *I think I'm gonna have to go back to the Triaxis... either that or get a graphic eq to roll off the highs. * The bummer is I just let a Triaxis by me for *$700. *
