well, first you should sell your car, your parent's car, kill your uncle, collect the life-insurance, sell your flat and buy this

You don't. If you want Petrucci tone you go to a DT concert and hear him play.

More importantly, which era of his career? He varied quite a bit.

Mesa's the way to go- myself, I'm quite happy with the tone I get from my nomad (lead sound- channel three vintage), and the best tone I'd ever heard was his G3 setup...

Get a Mesa Mark series amp and a high quality Floyd equipped shred axe with hot passive pups. Then do lots of work to develop your ears and hands, otherwise you will never really nail the JP tone.

I get pretty damn close to his Images & Words tone with a Crate GT200 amp and an Ibanez RG7420 with a Dimarzio Tone Zone 7. The secret though is to choke down on the pick (Dunlop Jazz III like JP uses) and sort of bend or slide into chords and apply miniscule vibrato.

If you're going to play chunky rhythm stuff, choke up on the pick as said before and also make sure you attack the power chord or whatever you're playing with full, even force. Even-ness is the key. Everything else is relatively easy if you have a Mesa amp.

I can get the Images and Words Tone e.g The Pull Me Under tone and Under a glass moon tone and I can get his Train of thought sound all my Marshall Mode 4 and my Jem but the way you hit the note and the even-nesss as Jeff said is a big part of getting the tone. I'll get you the setting i have on my amp if you like but whats your set-up at the moment?

Maybe even try some compression to get even closer to the even-ness thing. I'm not sure if/what John uses, but it's just a thought.

in the train of thought album John used a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectrifier and his signiture MusicMan and I don't think he used any pedals at all I read something and it said that he just went straight through to his Dual Rectrifier
