JP and the Formula 1 preamp

Does anyone feel as strong as I do that you can recognize in the recordings of Scenes and LTE when John is using the Formula Preamp?
I swear I can pick out when he's playing it, and I really dont like the tone he gets from it. *Some of his notes sustain and seem to change tones, almost like he starts off with the tone knob bassed out and returns it to the treble position.
Does anyone think Im smoking crack?

On LTE II, song 2 at 2:00 with the melody doesnt seem to have much "air" to it and most of all the note he holds at 3:48 how it changes tonally. *Other examples in this song are at 6:28 on the neck pup. *It sounds okay, but a little too warm to be from cab. *I think it's direct into the board. *This is the song I noticed it the most on.
Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Also, track 5 right at the 1 minute mark, that whole section up to minute 2 sounds real "direct" to me. *Will probably edit again after hearing more stuff with specifics.

I think I can hear it.
But I don't know much about the "formula 1 preamp" everyone seems to be talking about.

Sounds kinda weird. Like an FX. It's as though the guitar disappears (goes really bassy, and slips into the mix) then comes back and sings.

I'm pretty sure you could imitate that effect using a volume swell patch inline with a...ummm...I'm thinking phaser but without the whooshing.

I don't think you're smoking crack.

I think I know what you mean, but again, like wilch I'm not too familiar with it.
