JSX settings thread

Seeing as one is winging it's way to me it'd be nice to have a few settings to play with when it gets here and to tweak with. Why this and not a 6505? Didn't fancy a 6505 and i remember liking this amp a lot when i tried it out 2? years ago.

Settings for all channels, tips, tricks etc etc, all appreciated. As far as sounds go, anything really. From what i remember i preferred the crunch channel for rythm (much like the dual rec actually) and never really played around with the ultra that much!

So post some settings for all those using them here.

Re: JSX settings thread

No tips as such but jus to point out that i don't have any distortion pedals- there's jus no need with this baby - the JSX has plenty of power on both dist channels and the ultra has more than you'd ever really need!

You've made a good move buying this amp.

I have mine sat on a triple XXX cab.

EQ wise - scoop the ultra channel out and play the heaviest thing in your repetoire - it sound MINT. Though i usually have this as a lead channel with treble 6, mid 8, bass 5. Gain max, fat off.

Oh, and jus max your noise gate out straight away and never touch it again. It doesn't kill softly played notes or anything like that it jus cuts some noise out of the background. Bit lame really.

Agreed.

But everything at 12:0clock would be just fine too. Not sure if there are any bad setting on the JSX.
We played a club last night, one little house PA, one mic duct taped to a goofy mic stand. So I was "live" with my amp. Just me and one other guy with an acoustic direct. I had the 2x12 on a table behind me tipped back to try get the sound out as far as possible. I also did something I wouldn't do if it where on the floor, I turned the resonance and presence up half about way. The amp is so versatile. It will adapt to any situation. I didn't even bother hooking up the foot switch. I just ran the gain on the crunch channel about 11:00 and rolled my guitar back a tad until I hit solos. I took a pedal board, but ended up not using it. Just a guitar a cord and a JSX.

Re: JSX settings thread

Versatile as hell, you'll struggle to get a bad sound out of it imo.

As with any gear, mess with it yourself as you're bound to make personal adjustments anyway.

Personally I always use the Crunch channel, never really touching the Ultra, I'm going to get some kind of boost pedal for solos. I never turn the gain over about 4/5 too, as it's plenty heavy for rhythms and good for solos as I prefer a slightly smoother sound.

The type of cab has a big effect I think though, probably just as much as any cab will, but I know as soon as I plugged my JSX into my Cornford RK412 (vintage 30s) after using a Marshall 1936 2x12 for about a year, it sounded a whole world better.

Re: JSX settings thread

Well, i hopefully get it tomorrow, which'd be cool . Basically I bought it (as retarded as it sounds) as a backup for my triaxis/rivera tbr-5 rig. Will be running through trusty old marshall cabs as well. I did have one on trial for about a month 2 years ago, and stacked it up against a dual rec and a DSL. At the time for what i was doing the DSL had the balls i wanted, but I always think it was actually a mistake not going for the JSX and so now I finally get to own one

Just like having a few default starting points, as it is always a good idea to dial in settings thart you wouldn't normally dial in yourself to expand ones tonal horizons, plus to get some ideas of what you can do before going off and dialing something in yourself

Re: JSX settings thread

I tried a few different cabs with my JSX. The best to my ears was a JCM900 1960B loaded with the standard G12T-75 Celestions.

I run all of the treble and mids at 5 and the bass at 8. I seldom run the gain on either channel past 5 and very rarely use my Sparkle Drive at all.

This is the only head I've ever used that can do nu-metal, classic metal, rock and country without having to turn a knob.

You know, it seems that quite a few people rag on marshall cabs, but i've always preferred them. Tried mesa cabs for a while, and while allright, there's just something more rawk about the marshalls

So yeah, a 1960B with gt-75's (800) is what this is getting used with, and am going to see how it sounds through my old ancient marshall with greenbacks

Also pleased that a lot of people are pointing out the versatility of this amp as it is supposed to be a backup, but i get the feeling it may not be!

Re: JSX settings thread

I've had a JSX head for about 18 months. I play the head through a full stack with B-52 stealth series cab's, loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s. Having tried just about everything, here are my favorite settings:

Low Gain input

Presence - just under 5
Resonance - just above 5

Ultra (Fat off):
Treble - just under 5
Mid - just above 5
Bass - 8
Gain - 4

Crunch (Fat off):
Treble - 5
Mid - 5
Bass - 7
Gain - just above 2

Noisegate - just under 2

Clean:
Treble - just above 5
Mid - just below 5
Bass - just below 6

I often tweak the amp just to enjoy its versatility, but usually return to the settings above.

Here are some sample recordings using those settings:
