I was thinking that it was a special Wah wah pedal...

But nevermind, I will try to make the noises I want with an other Fx, or with the wah set "post" in the effects loop (sound like wind !).

Thanks for all, and pray for the next "St Anger"...

It is funny though
Kirk is a very fast guitar player it's just that his note choice is very poor.
It's not about playing as fast as you can - it's about playing MUSIC as fast as you can.
As Polaris said the broken on/off switch is the only thing you need to get the "Kirk Hammet sound".
That and a EMG81 equiped guitar going into a MT-2 and a Mesa amp.

ilia

p.s. Kirk used to be one of my heroes back in the 80's (as he was more famous than any other fast player out there) and I even own all Metallica albums to date AND an ESP MII Deluxe with a set of EMG81's in it. None more rock.

I just watched the new videos that come on the DVD with St. Anger.......Uh oh, Kirk's found a new toy, the Whammy Pedal!!! He only uses it on one song though, and he uses it pretty tastefully.

Let's hope he doesn't become smitten with it and uses it all the friggin time.

if i'm not mistaken he uses the crybaby rackmount and the ernie ball houses the guts to the controller...

which is going to make it difficult to dial in his exact sound...the rackmount offers much more versatility in dialing in a sound over a standard pedal. keep in mind that the guitars, pups, preamps, amps, and eqs that he uses are all working towards that sound too.

Im not one to totally cop-out and say "thats subjective!!!," like so many other people do, but that statement is very subjective. Im not a huge Metallica fan these days or a Hammet fan but I always loked Kirks solos in Justice and Black.

Im surprised so many poeple think the solo's from justice are unmusical. I can see all albums up to Justice, but the 2 songs I listed earlier I thought were great examples of fusion and style in a metal context. Maybe Im just "special"

Dan- valid point, and I've heard an occasional lead from him that's pretty good. But the majority of his early work doesn't appear to be terribly well thought out to me, and the majority of his later work is just pentatonics through a heavy wah. I'm not saying I'm a better guitarist, just that if i could I'd want to be a different one.

Excellent point on the wah and tone, though. I've always felt they were much more responsive through a good tube amp set for onlyu moderately high preamp gain, allowing more tonal intreraction between the filter and the preamp.

Oh, and one thing I know for sure is that when playing live, Kirk uses a Crybaby...in an Ernie Ball Volume Pedal casing.
The moded Volume Pedals used to control the EMB Audio Remote Wah witch He used durind the 90's all the way to 2000 and switch to the dunlop DCR - 1SR rack unit. You can hear the EMB on Load, Re-load, S&M, Cunning Stunt and the San Diago DVD on Live Sh*t Binge And Purge.

Two links to see waht they look like

the main thing you need to mimic is lacking any understanding of music theory.. just stay out of key and you will do fine

Re: Kirk Hamett Cry Baby Mod...

His mod is actually a "any to Penta" converter pedal.

I must say that I enjoy many Metallica songs (except the entire St Anger album) and solos.

Re: Kirk Hamett Cry Baby Mod...

You know, I came in here hoping beyond hope somehow I could be the first to make the "bypass the on/off switch mod" joke...

...then I realized that five years ago I sort of already had.

Kirk's one of those players whose playing has actually gotten worse over the years. Back when he was studying under Joe he occasionally put together a pretty inventive thrash lead. These days, he's trying to be a "feel" player, but with a "thrash" vibrato (fast, weak). It just doesn't work.

Off topic. I thought Lars was the cry baby in this band.
