Laney gh 100l/50

i have a strong feeling for buying this amp.... i love the warm sound it produces from hearing some youtubeclips/gilbert/kotzen.
the amp would be used @ home most of the time...so i was thinking of the 50watt version...or would it be a good idea to just own a 100watt ? money is no problem its more the practical problem for sounding decent @ home.... anyone own this amp and have reviews of them?

and many others most notable being Tony Iommi (Own signature GH amp over the years),

Many users of the GH also use the VH which is basically two GH channels into one amp - mainly for one clean/distortion channel

Re: Laney gh 100l/50

Im still uncertain as to why they make 50w and 100w amplifiers, as it doest make any noticable difference in volume. For an amp to be twice as loud, the watts has to be increased 10 fold.. as in, a 100w amp, is twice as loud as a 10w amp.

This is why PA systems can be thousands of watts!

But yeah, very cool sounding amp. Ive been looking for one to try out myself

It should still be noticeably louder, about 15% if I remember correctly. Increasing power tenfold relates to a 6dB increase in sound intensity (most perceive this as "twice" the volume) while doubling realates to a 3dB increase in sound intensity. That's considerably less, but noticeable none the less. If you find youself watching tv but need to turn up the volume, you'd usually increase by about 3dB.

Personnally, I'd get the 50W version (whether for home use or any other use), set the amp for distorted tones and roll back on the volume knob for clean tones. 50W is still very loud, and I wouldn't be lying if I said that a 5W amp could deafen you.

the main thing wattage affects is headroom. sure it adds some volume too, but not a huge amount. clean headroom, on the other hand is increased substantially, which may be important if you need to be able to play at high volumes and not have the clean channel distort. on the other hand, if you want the tubes to start distorting sooner to take advantage of that warm tube overdrive, then lower wattage is your best bet.

i have the laney gh50L (there have been a few threads on this amp) and it is very very loud even for a 50watter. i think if you are primarily using it at home and won't be able to crank it you won't be getting the best tone from it. it's about as bare bones of an amp as you can get (no reverb, one channel with footswitchable gain stage), but the basic sound of the amp is pretty awesome. the voicing of the amp imo is very hotrodded jcm800-ish and the drive channel has plenty of gain. i usually run a tubescreamer out front and that's really all you'd need for a very saturated metal sound. i also like the sound of just running a tubescreamer and a distortion pedal (bb xotic preamp) on the clean channel for a tone that is not as scooped and better for solos.

My bad, as of late lots of people are leaving Laney (Andy Timmons etc)

Hard to keep up to date, I'll stick to what I use .

Re: Laney gh 100l/50

I own both a the 100 watt and the 50 watt...and I say go with the 100 watt. The 100 watt sounds so much tighter, bigger, and punchier than the 50 watt version. Actually, I was so surprised how different the 50 watt sounded compared to the 100 watt.

I emailed Laney actually about it and they agreed with me :-)

Re: Laney gh 100l/50

o_O its first time i hear about this ;O

i got 100w too but only because 50w wasnt available for me at the moment, i play in very loud band and this head is still sooo loud that i recommend every one to go with 50w version

i'd like to see inside of 100w and 50w that would be interesting to know if there's any physical difference causing this

Re: Laney gh 100l/50

I haven't tried the 100-watter, but I agree that the 50W version is indeed really loud. You very likely won't ever be turning the volume past 2/10 when playing with heavy distortion unless you live in a detached home or have deaf neighbours. A power attenuator might not be a bad idea either, I'm considering getting a Weber Mass or THD Hot Plate myself.
