Laney GH100l/50l VS Peavey 6505/+

So im in the market for a new amp and I've narrowed it to these two guys. I have a carvin legacy at the moment and it's killer for leads but it can't to really extreme metal, its close but not close enough. So now i really havn't a clue which one of these to choose from.

I've been reading reviews and listening to youtube clips and not much is out there. Really what i'd like to know is which one can do heavy metal and leads well? I know the laney is killer for shred ala gilbert and the 6505 can do heavy metal but which can do both? Not so concerned with the clean as i know both suck at it, as i have a legacy for that!

Thanks for the help.

The 6505 is more modern sounding with a more saturated gain. The Laney is more like a boosted Marshall, high gain, but drier. Both can do metal, but in different ways.

Think Arch Enemy "Stigmata"(5150/6505) vs Stratovarious "Destiny" (Laney).

They both get the job done, it just depends on which sound you are after. The Laney will sound more raw, while the 5150 will sound more compressed. The Laney has more of that "classic" metal sound and the 5150 has that modern sound, like toshiro said.

Laney GH50L/100L for its versatility. I had a GH50L stack for over a year and miss it after selling. A good OD pedal in front of it can get you into metal territory.

I definitely don't need an OD with my VC50 (same gain channel as Gh50l). Disgusting amounts of gain available.

For the "really extreme metal" he mentions, you need to drive the amp harder.

Maybe it's because I'm running mine with hot preamp tubes, but mine has enough gain for any type of metal, with the boost engaged that is. Turning the gain on 7 and boost on 7 is enough for Opeth type metal.

OD Boosting isn't about gain, it's about compression and tightness of the low end.

Re: Laney GH100l/50l VS Peavey 6505/+

agreed with what everyone else has said about the laney ghL (i have the 50w). great amp, but be aware it is one channel (footswitchable gain) and the clean channel is nothing to write home about. it has high and low inputs, and the high input is very metal sounding to me. i personally run through the low input, which gives more of a rawer, ac/dc type basic tone. i love this amp, wouldn't trade it for the world. and on e-bay, they are ridiculously cheap.

oh and did i mention this amp is LOUD. i mean really frikkin' loud, lol.

You should also add the TT50/100 to your list. I have the TT100 combo and love it to bits, voicing is modern unlike the GH/VH series.

For what you want to play the 5150/6505 is the better choice IMO. I play the same type f stuff and my boosted 5150 with V30 loaded cab nails that type of tone perfectly.

Well i bought the laney, couldn't pass up the deal at all $450 plus shipping, hell of a deal. Its mint!

Anyways it sounds similar unboosted to my boosted legacy, but when i boost the laney OMG its so sick! the low gain tones are awesome as well. Im super happy with it.

That's great man, I'm sure you'll grow to love that amp! I still regret selling my GH50L stack but will get it back someday.
