Laney users - I need your opinions - old and new amps !

as the title says, I really need some input.

its one thing to try out an amp in the shop, its another to live with it - and yes, ive read the JEMsite guide to amps....

the amps I have my eye on are:

GH50L half stack
TT50 half stack or combo

Im also considering the VC30 but... as im already spending £440 (potentially) on the VC30, I might as well go the extra mile and get the TT of the GH50 half stack..

Im not gigging at the moment but that will change and going by the type of place Ive gigged in the past it will be a total mix of small/medium and large venues...

Id like to hear from long time owners of older laney gear as well as recent converts and everyone in between...

Thanks

Jaden.

What style of music?

Do you need clean / crunchy / dirty from one amp?

Re: Laney users - I need your opinions - old and new amps !

I recently purchased a mint condition 86' Laney AOR 50 watt head, and am experiencing a certain amount of growing pains with it. First off, is trying to get a nice dirty tone, while still maintaining a usable clean. Second is the large amount of hiss that these things produce.
I used to own the 100 watt version of this head, back in the late 80s, but never had to come up with a workable clean, as well, then. The hiss MAY be resolved with a gate. Not sure at the moment. If it comes down to it (and I hope it doesn't), I will get my distortion from an external pedal, and run the head, strictly clean.

yes I do, ive played covers and own stuff and will do so again, that means that I need one amp to do it all.
when im playing with my own sound I tend to use a lot of bass and treble and keep the mids to a minimum and absolutely cannot put up with a fuzzy distortion sound, I prefer the chunk of tonns of overdrive

I was attracted to the TT50 because of the 3 channel seperatte EQ - Ive also looked at the carvin V3 combo but.... I really like certain elements of Paul Gilberts sound and thats why I was looking for a laney - plus they are £200 cheaper....

I like the VH100R best. It's the same as the GH100L but with a separate clean channel.

If you need a clean channel, you'll have to get a TT.

Yes. Run it into a LOT of tube watts. I ran a POD into an 800watts Peavey power amp into a Legacy 4x12. It was the best that POD ever sounded. POD can be sterile without a tube power amp.
