Lead vs. Rythm

I've always used the same highly distorted sound for lead and rythm alike, maybe putting a little more volume in at a solo.

My question is, how do you setup a lead and rythm sound? *

I love the lead channel on the Legacy, it's perfect for my rythm sound. *But I want more for the lead, more gain and volume.

I bought a Marshall Guv'Nor pedal today and am trying to figure out how to implement it into my lead sound, but in the lead channel, all it ads is noise. *On the clean channel it is great though, no noise at all.

Any help here would be appreciated.

TIA

I think I may have solved my own problem. *I could use the Guv'Nor in the clean channel if I could get the rythm sound close to the Legacy's lead channel and use the lead channel as a lead channel.....some things are simple

Now I have to remember to kill the pedal when switching channels.....

Ideally you have a nice 3-channel tube amp with independant volume control and boost/distortion pedal in front.

CH1 - clean (slightly distorted w/ pedal on)
CH2 - rhythm (more 'boost" w/ pedal on)
CH3 - lead (even more 'boost" w/ pedal on - slightly higher volume)

But you have Legacy so you need to do a tapdance

Reading your other thread, i think you might be over-setting the distortion pedals, as the SD-1 and DS-1 are almost unbeatable for the "boost". Use to enhance tone, not create it. Just my $0.02 ...glen

I know Zakk Wylde uses JCM800 amps, and when he does a solo, he boosts his amp using a Boss OD-1 pedal...Might not color your sound as much as a DS-1...

I ordered a DS1 from Carvin last night, and when it gets here I am going to sit down with it and try to tool it. *I agree with what you're saying Glen, I just need to spend a few minutes with the pedal in front of my amp.

I tried it out at GC, but the amp that they have available to test drive FX sucks and you DO have to create tone!

I’m getting 3 distinctly different tones with the Legacy doing it the same way Glen described. I set the gain on the lead channel at about 6 for a milder gain. I use an EQ pedal or DS-1 for extra gain on the same channel and nothing on the clean channel.

The distortion seems to react the same way when I kick in the boost as it does if I just crank up the gain on the amp.

In a perfect world I would have a stack of Legacys I could switch between. Unfortunately I must pay for my house, car, cards etc…

What glen and bob said. *

Zakk Wylde uses an SD-1, not an OD-1. *There are subtle differences, w/o getting technical about how the clipper diodes are arranged, the SD-1 has a more asymetrical circuit which generates more even harmonics than the SD-1 or OD-1.

Check the second question down on this page:

http://www.vai.com/FanForum/answers03.html

Steve says he uses a DS-1, and this even gives some sample knob settings! *

I would imagine like most players Steve and Zakk have used different things at different times, but most photos of Steve's pedal board that I've seen show the orange DS-1.

Zakk Wylde uses the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive which feeds the input of his heavily modified Marshall JCM 800 head. I've heard it straight from him when he was explaining his rig on a 'Guitar Techniques' jam session.

* Steve uses the DS-1 as I saw it on his pedalboard at a live show.

* * * I really like the SD-1 as a booster pedal for a tube amp...I've not tried anything (so far) that works better.
