Legacy: Greenbacks Vs V30s?

Do you know why Carvin changed the speakers? because as far as I know Steve spent many time choosing the right ones for the tone he was looking for so it is strange they changed them later.

On the other hand, which ones do you prefere with the Legacy? (if you have tried them both)

Re: Legacy: Greenbacks Vs V30s?

With a Legacy head, I'm not sure about the 2. But I'm willing to bet that the Greenbacks sound great. My friend almost dumped his Diezel head for a VHT until he plugged it into an OLD Marshall cab with the original Greenbacks. His head never sounded better. There is no "right speaker cab". Just what sounds best with your head and playing style I suppose. People talk about speakers "breaking up" at certain levels. But I don't think most of us would play consistently at a breaking up level to worry about it. Personally, I don't like any speaker that sounds brittle or thin at any level. Warm and punchy is good. I use a 2x12 Legacy cab. It don't punch and wonk like the 4x14. But it's tighter than a combo. And lighter than a 4x12. I often wish I had a 4x12 for cranking when the wife and kids aren't home so I can rattle the windows. But again, the 2x12 is plenty really.

Yeah, that' wasn't much help. But it's all I got at the moment. I think I heard the v30's are a bit more midrangey.

Darin is correct.
Different heads sound different with different cabs (did I say 'different' enough times?)

A word of caution: Greenbacks are 30 watts @ hms.
Vintage 30's are 60 watts @8 Ohms. The name reflects the 30 year anniversary- not wattage. Greenbacks can be BLOWN if too much power is dumped into them!!!!!!

Re: Legacy: Greenbacks Vs V30s?

Thanks.

I obviously know different speakers produce different tones. I've got cabs with V30s, with Greenbacks and with G12Hs so I know it.

My questions were:

why Carvin changed the speakers?
which ones do you prefere with the Legacy?

Ah!, Greenbacks are rated 25w

Re: Legacy: Greenbacks Vs V30s?

Somehow,.. I don't think that's the issue..

the greenbacks are 25 watts SPL, so they can take 25 watts, but higher peaks.
4 x 25 = 100W SPL.. With acceptable speaker distortion.

Legacy amp output = max 100W.

Doesn't seem to be a problem ?

Re: Legacy: Greenbacks Vs V30s?

I just sold a 1969 Marshall cab w/ original greenbacks to a friend and am getting a Legacy cab (2x12 vintage 30's) tonight. The greenback sound very warm and smooth but don't have a lot of low end and are kinda edgy. Greenbacks sound great at low volume or if you're going for a more vintage"aka" midrange sound.
Vintage 30's have way more low end and are better for scooped mid sounds or very fast percussive picking. Mesa use the 30's in the rectifier cabs.
The're very different sounding/reacting speakers. The marshall cab sounds
incredible with a Bogner Ecstacy or Marshall; with a Mesa or Peavey JSX its
too loose/mushy on the low end. You have to use your gear(guitar/amp) to really decide if its for you. Good Luck.

I suspect you are going to really like that 2x12 cab. I love mine. Please give us a review when you warm up to it.

Re: Legacy: Greenbacks Vs V30s?

Well.... Yesterday I tried evething and a little bit more.

I tried G12H, V30 and Greenbacks and I liked how it sounded with all of them.

I prefere the greenbacks for the cleans and the V30s for the leads but by a short distance.

The best results were obtained by using 2 x Greenbacks + 1 V30 + 1 G12H. That was a dream of tone.

I will make more trials before I decide what to leave.
