Legacy+Tube Screamer+G Major=Argh!!! Please help

I'm currently using a Legacy 100W halfstack with a Tubescreamer in front as a boost. I'm also running my G Major through the effects loop. However, the G Major seems to be generating horrendous feedback! The TS and Legacy are fine together, but when I plug in the G Major I get nearly uncontrollable feedback. I think the problem is down to the setting of the levels on the G Major, but the manual is not very helpful in general. Also, the noisegate doesn't seem to work worth beans either. It either dampens too much or not enough. Does anyone have any ideas? I would think that a unit like the G Major would have a fairly decent noisegate, but for some reason I can't figure it out. Thanks in advance!

When you turn the G-Major on, but it in bypass mode... i.e. hit the button that says bypass.

If you still get feedback, it's not related to patch settings.

Re: Legacy+Tube Screamer+G Major=Argh!!! Please help

Since I use the Gmajor in the loop of my SLO,,,,which has a line level loop......the problem may be due to the Carvin loop. If it is an instrument level loop (i.e. pedal friendly), you will have to alter the input/output level on the Gmajor. I think this is in the global settings......involving pressing a littly button near the display screen. When set up properly, the Gmajor is super transparent and awesome, so I'm sure it is down to this...........and also make sure you are following the directions involving the input/output knobs on the Gmajor also. They are different than the global input/output to go from line level to instrument level. If you need more help or don't have a manual, I could look it up for you. This will hopefully be an easy fix for you. Carvin, like Soldano, also uses a tube buffered loop, so it could even be that 12ax7........if the input/output section is already set properly.

It sounds like the signal from the legacy effects loop is to big for the G Major. I don't think you can adjust the levels on the legacy so maybe you can configure the G Major for use in an effects loop. check the following values

Input Range
Range: Pro/Consumer
Sets the sensitivity of the G•Major Input.
Default setting is “Pro” which will match most
preamps.
Use pro I'd guess

Output Range
Range: 2dBu, 8dBu, 14dBu, 20dBu
Sets the maximum Gain range of the analog
Output Stage.
Try the different options to see what works.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I'll give your suggestions a go and report back with my findings... I'm a bit new to tube amps in the first place, so this is all uncharted territory for me anyway. I do think that it has something to do with the global in/out levels and the output range; it seems to be a bit more distorted when I'm running the G Major through the loop than when I'm not.

Haven't seen you much on the Braveboard, Thared; where've you been?

Can't really see why the G Major would be feeding back at all unless you have regeneration turned up to infinity on reverb and delay settings (which can cause runaway signal multiplication, which is a bit like, but not feedback) - what MAY be happening is that the compressor is globally turned on to a high compression setting, and the resulting gain is causing the guitar pickups to squeal microphonically.

Step 1 is - turn the guitar volume to zero - do you still get feedback? If so, it's a signal path problem, not a gain problem. Try running the G Major before the Legacy, rather than in the loop - problem gone? If so then you have some kind of level mismatch between the G major and the effects loop ofd the Amp - I have a G Major, love it, no issues ever - from memory (dim unfortunately) there is an "instrument/line" level switch on the back, or possibly it's one of the global parameters - if you run the G Major in the effects loop, it must be set to Line Level, otherwise you will be clipping the A/D D/A converters, which can sound truly horrible!

And remember, if all else fails - read the manual!

Good luck!

Re: Legacy+Tube Screamer+G Major=Argh!!! Please help

its all broken!! So send it to me >_< hehe

in all seriousness it should all be working together just fine, Vai used his G-Force in the effects loop with no problem so I don't see why a g Major would be so different.
Maybe try the G Major on another amp to see if maybe there is an issue with that, and of course keep trying to tweak settings to see if it is just an issue with settings.
