Question

Les Paul vs. SG

This is probably something you hear alot but how would you compare an epi. les paul to an SG?

Any opinions?

Re: Les Paul vs. SG

I would start by listing the things they have in common, then I would contrast the things that are different.

Re: Les Paul vs. SG

Les paul. Sg's are poo for me. Besides, I cant' get that AC/DC SG schoolboy stage stompin out my freakin head.

Make IT Stop!!! AHHHHHHHHHH.

High voltage.

EDIT: Just to be clear...I prefer the Les Paul. But, I have some AC/DC vinyl. I'm old.

Re: Les Paul vs. SG

main differences of the Gibsons, not sure about the Epis (as far as wood goes)
LP - Mahogany body with maple cap (except Customs), arched top, single cut away.

SG Mahogany body, double cut away, flat top.

Both have 2 humbuckers with a volume and tone for each pickup, 3 way toggle switch, stop bar and tune-o-matic bridge, etc.

No... the guitars in your picture. Except the SG.

Anyways...nice guitars.

Not enough IBZ's in that pic.

Pretty much sums it up. I to associate SG with either Toni Iommi or Angus Young.... or duckman as S-man already suggested.

I've always prefered a LP desite the single cutaway and extra weight because they simply sound that much better and then some.

Re: Les Paul vs. SG

SG's can be neck heavy!!! Especially the Epiphone models which have a slightly thicker neck than the Gibson ones.

Be prepared for the neck to take a nosedive every time you strap an Epi SG on. The positioning of the strap button coupled with the thinner body (compared to an Les Paul) doesn't help.

A Les Paul will be much more balanced in comparison!

Same goes for Gibbos - If I was looking at one against the other, I'd definitely consider a half decent 2nd hand Gibbo SG over an Epi Les Paul - better wood, much better finish, better feel and MUCH better hardware - I've picked up a few Epi LPs and SGs, and, sorry to sound like a bit of a snob, but most (not all) of the LPs felt ghastly, and ALL of the SGs felt horrible : just something to do with Epiphone's polyurethane finishes really irks me.... and that headstock ...... urk ....... designed by someone who's visually challenged I suspect.

Re: Les Paul vs. SG

I tryed an Epi LP and felt the sound good for the price of the guitar but the hardware isn't good and it went always out of tune...it was of a friend of mine and i had to do a good set up when it came out of the shop
