Hi Jupiter,
Did your friend get the Pod 2.0 manual? And if so did he reinitialise the memory to factory? There ought to be some preset good enough already to serve as a basis there. In case he doesn't know how: turn the POD on while pushing both arrows will do the trick.
As somebody pointed out it doesn't have that much gain for death metal. The 2 recto-model have a lot of crunch but the overdrive never saturate as much as the Soldano models. Bear in mind that I've never tried a real Recto nor a Soldano so the comment only applies to the POD model. To boost the overdrive I got myself a TS-9DX (awesome combination) but still not enough "chuck-a-chuk" for heavy rythm, finally got a Boss MT-2. Now IMO the MT-2 sounds like @#$ with most of the POD presets. I found only one that I really dig to use 8-B which is based on a
Mesa Mark IIC clean, now this produce some very good results.
It's very though to provide "precise" settings as the pickups, wood etc make a world of differences. A setup that I like with my Jem may sounds like crap with my semi-hollowbody and vice-versa. So the EQ section is difficult to share.
Myself I stumble on a few good settings while editing using SoundDiver (which came with the POD) on the computer. A midi cable is dirt cheap and if your friend didn't get the SoundDiver CD he can download the OEM POD version at
http://www.emagic.de
Quite a few parameters can't be edited otherwise. For example the delay is potent but hard to adjust with the POD interface.
BTW Keith is right about the AIR switch it's day or night. If you drive your amp with the POD make sure you don't have any headphones connected as they bypass the switch position and and activate AIR (which you don't want when driving an amp!)
