Live Setup

Hi, I have some friends wanting me to be a tech for them. They are performing in an area with a PA system. Im wondering how I should setup the sound system, someone said that they wanted to run their regular amp and then also the PA. Is this really ideal to have basically a monitor of just himself, or to actually setup monitors also of the whole area.

Also he wanted to throw some delay pedals in there after other kinds of pedals, he said that this wouldn't work well with it being unamplified because it would cause loss of tone and distortion, if we we're to only use the PA how would I wire the effects in after the included preamp from the mixer?

Im new to this type of stuff, and have about a month before I'm going to be doing any of this live stuff so I have time to learn.

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Live Setup

Hey, this is Wade speaking (Ryan's friend).

I am wanting to hook up to a PA system to my live gear. He is referring to my FX loop when he speaks of my delay pedals. I have no experience with PA systems and mixers, so I sent him here to ask a few questions.

Thanks

Re: Live Setup

you gave no details about what your band is, if there are singers, what kind of music, etc. It's tough to give advice on such a sketchy question.

What i can tell you, however, is that the only thing the PA and the guitar amp have to do wtih eacheother is that the guitar rig should stand alone, unto itself with its own delay pedals and f/x loop. Once you have the guitar sound you want, stick a mic in front of the speaker of the guitar amp.

If you bring the guitar back thru the monitor that the singer is hearing him/herself thru, they will throw things at you and walk off the stage.

If you want to use a delay for the vocals in the f/x loop of the PA, you run an Aux out (aux 1 is usually monitors, so consider Aux 2) to the input of the delay unit. The output of the delay unit, ideally, goes back to a channel whered you'd mix it like an instrument. Make sure the delay unit is ONLY send a 'wet' signal, meaning there is ONLY delay coming thru the return channel.

I highly recommend finding someone to help you locally. no offense, but you guys are pretty clueless and it's not an easy thing to do well. You don't want to screw up your band's performance with bad sound.

Re: Live Setup

Makes sense. We're both highschoolers and its a school function so doesn't matter thaaaat much.

I see what you mean, and it makes sense now that I think about it.
They play normally older rock, and no vocals.

One question though, how would I set up a synth in there? Would I still mic up the amp or do something special for that?
