long term guitar storage

I've got a Les Paul that was given to me when I was a kid and is ancient. I never play it, but occasionally use it in the studio.
Anyway, it's been in the case in my guitar room for about a year and today i took it out and the bridge is oxidizing really bad. It's gotten really rough and I'm also starting to see what looks like the beginning of rust on the screws.
Any way to keep this from happening? I don't play this guitar very much, but definitally don't want it to waiste away. Any ideas?

You may try some type of humidity control system. M*******F***** has one that is around $70. It's pretty pricey but it may help.

Thanks for the suggestion... I'm sure humidity is the major problem. After all I live in Southern Louisiana, not the greatest place to store a guitar.

Also, wipe it clean every time you play it if you play it rarely. Your sweat remains on those metal parts and helps corrosion.
