Check the set up on your guitar and make sure the gain knobs are on max.

Good luck.

Practice your vibrato....good vibrato, and a good touch in general, help sustain....and change your strings! *

Build a room with aprox. 10x5 m

Put a wall of cabinets in one side,
Plug in some 5150 heads and half dozen of mesa dual rectified,

Turn on, all gain on max, plug you guitar, take all of the house ........

Infinite sustain !!!!!!!!!!

Hehehe *!!

Right on! Good technique makes all the difference. Learn to do your vibrato right and you can double your sustain.

Yup....that's how Steve keeps those notes ringing forever....another good example of vibrato-aided sustain, Satch's playing in Flying In A Blue Dream (the song, but I assume the whole album as well)

Try this:

Plug in to the Drive or Lead channel. Set the gain or drive knob on the amp somewhere between 6 & 8. If your guitar sounds too buzzy, roll the distortion knob on your pedal back to 1/2 or lower, and turn up the output or volume on the pedal to really slam the pre-amp. *Make sure the volume knob on you guitar is set to 10 and you should be able to sustain for days. When you want a cleaner rhythm, just turn down using your guitar volume knob and you should notice a big change in the distortion and sustain levels.

You didn't say how you have your distortion connected to the amp, but if it's in the effects loop, take it out. Try going from your Guitar --> Distortion --> Amp Input. Save the effects loop for effects like chorus, delay, flanger, etc. if you want to use it.

Keys to sustain:

Technique
Good guitar, solid construction
Good pickup(s), high output
Use higher gauge strings (10's over 9's)
Good amp

Which valvestate do you have? *I have a Marshall AVT 100 which is their new Valvestate which I use for practice sometimes and I have zero sustain problems with it even on OD 1 with < 3/4 gain. *Why are you using a pedal to generate distortion? *Your amp has a 12ax7 in it for this purpose.

One other thought...Make sure that your pickups are adjusted properly. If you have them set too close to the strings (too high) the magnetic pull will kill off some sustain.

to lgascoig

i have the old version vs100.
the reason why I use a distortion pedal, is because in my opinion the distortion in the amp sound bad.
the pedal distortion is much better.

another question.
what is a compression pedal? will it give longer sustain?
