looking for Vai lead tone program - anyone with a line 6 Fle

just got a Line 6 FlextoneII

have been fine-tweaking and I like what I am getting so far, but I could always use ideas and advice.

has anyone got any killer Vai-ish lead tone programs they can share?

Looking for a sweet Legacy Type overdriven lead-tone that sings with sustain and has a touch of delay...

please share your programs with me.

hope it's ok to post this here. If not sorry!

Let me know what you come up with. *Check out the Line 6 site - the LUP is where you might find the patches.

Or, the best I can tell you off hand is to use one of the Modern Hi-Gain (maybe even a rectified) models and then visit Carvin.com for Vai's settings. *That'll get you close, and then you can tweak it from there.

I jammed with some dudes on Monday night, and he had two Johnsons (no pun intended) - he downloaded about 10-15 Legacy patches - so I imagine that the Line 6 patches should be just as abundant considering the popularity of the Line 6 products over Johnson's.

If and when you get it close, please post it here so I can try it too!

I'll work on it tonight.... need to study the live album and his samples from Carvin....

I'll post a couple when they sound right.

here is what I came up with after toying for about a 1/2 hour.

Vai Legacy lead tone for Flextone II (wanna be of course)

amp model: Modern High Gain #2
cabinet model: line 6 4X10
Drive: 7
Bass: 8.5
Middle: 9
Treble: 5.5
Chan Vol: 8
Reverb: 1.5
Distortion(drive): off
Presence: off
Noise Gate: off
Effect Tweak: whatever you feel
Delay: nice usual 250 millisecond with a couple of slapbacks

give it a go and see.... seems to be kinda close...

Kirk: seriously thanks for motivating me to answer my own question! * :cheesy:

I haven't read into all the options of the Line 6 gear yet, but if there is an option of adding compression, ad as much as possible! Steve's tone is VERY compressed....

I have the LUP Vai patch but I have to say that for me it didn't really seem to come close. I do have a couple of library files with Vai patches in them also which were created by an expert user which, to my ears, came closer to the mark. If ya want I could post 'em on my domain and you can download the whole kit'n'kabootle. You'll need the midi cables to your computer and such along with the software installed (comes on the CD with the amp). Gimme a hollar if ya want 'em.

I want that patch, but I do not have a midi input for my computer.....

It must be in the fine tuning that gets it close. I can't seem to get real close with the knobs that are on the amp...

Could you give them to me anyway, just in case I get that stuff for my computer.

maybe if you could post here & email me the the basic setup as well as the fine tuning that would be better....

I do want them!

The problem is that I can't just post the settings. You need the software to even be able to read them and like I said, a few of them are libraries with up to 30 patches in them. I'll zip 'em all down and post them on my domain so you can download them.

If you have a sound card that has a joystick port then you have a midi port on your machine. Most cards don't have a dedicated midi port but will map to the joystick port for midi instead. All you need is a cable that has a joystick plug on one side and two midi cables on the other side (one for in and the other for out). You can get this cable in just about any music store that deals with midi devices and it's real cheap. Get a couple of longer midi cables to add to the ends and you are set.

this works for me:

modern high gain #1
cab on 4x12 w/ vintage 30's *(the one at 3 o'clock)
drive *8
bass *3
mid * *7
treb * 8
presence on
dist off
gate off
reverb 1.5
i like to use my ds-1 in front of it and if so back off gain to about 5 -- set ds-1 with tone and dist at 9 o'clock and level at 12 o'clock

if this doesnt get you as close as you want to be, then you wont get there with a line6
comp/delay with tweak at 4 and about 700ms delay

as a postscript, if you want the brighter vai tone, use the line6 4x12 (the last one, its at about 5 o'clock on the dial) and crank the bass to about 5 or 6. *and if youre using the flextones A.I.R line out to record, this configuration is much better than the previous.

looking for Vai lead tone program

Hi again Super,

Okay, sorry it took so long, I got a new motherboard and processor and had to format and reinstall Window$ to get everything to run correctly again. I have about a million programs that I use for this and that and I had to reinstall them all. Anyways, here's the link to those patches I promised you.

I tended to use the Mesa model more than anything so a lot of the patches are for that model but there's a whole bunch more than just that including some good Vai and Satch patches. I hope these help you find your tone.

Take care and good luck in your search,

LJ

Super,

yer very welcome "bruh", anything for a fellow JEMster (weeeeeeeell, almost anything ... LOL).

I'm gonna leave 'em up for a while if anyone wants them. There's shred patches, fat tone patches, clean patches to cry for, lead patches, fusion patches, Jazz patches ... a little bit of everything! I even think I included my own settings that I used when I had my Flex. I got some gawd chunk going on channel one! One whole library is dedicated to star's sounds. Vai, Satch, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Clapton, Hendrix, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, U2, Pink Floyd, etc.

For more, make sure you check out the LUP at www.line6.com and also go to their forum. Some of the guys on there are geniouses when it comes to squeezing sounds out of the Flex. The best patches from the above pack are actually from the guys on the forum and not the LUP itself.

To quote a phrase my kids would love, "Gotta get 'em all!"
