Marshall 2x12 cabs?

One is squatty and rectangular, and the other looks like a small 4x12 (model numbers?). Could someone describe the differences in tone of these beasts?

Right now, the only thing available (sort-of/not really)is the JCM 1936 cabinet. It is the same width as a full-size JCM-series head and is basically half of a JCM 1960 A or B cabinet.

The 1922 is no longer available but was sized so that it would match up with the 2x12 combos.

There is another 2x12 cab called the TSLC212 but that was designed to match the TSL122 combo-both of which have two different Clestion speakers in them.

I have the 1960B 2x12. I run it with my Legacy combo. It sounds good, but by no means does it move as much air as a 4 x 12. In conjunction with my Legacy Combo the 2x12 marshall sounds good. If you are looking for a cab that will produce serious bass tones get the 4 x 12.

Have you got any idea of the serial # or model # of the Cabs as Marshall have produced 13 different 2x12s over the years.

Speaker codes could also Identify the cab and any pics would be great

The more info you give me the more I can tell you what it is and what speakers it has and therfore the likely sound.

Greg you might have a 1936 cab as the '1960B' model is only a 4x12 and has been since the year 1965

CerealK--thanks for the help offer. I don't have a cab I need indetified, just considering getting a 2x12 and wanted to get familiar with characteristics of the cab (given the speaks were the same...I'd probably load with V30s).

I think the rectangular one I had in mind is the 1936, but the smaller 1922 might be a possibility as well.

The other one is a different config--speakers mounted vertically, one over the other, and I believe with a slant, so it looks like a little 4x12.

That should be located by the speaker jack panel.

The angled 2x12 is likely to be a 1961A (available 1988-90) which has G12T75 Celestion speakers in there.

...or...

1966A (available 1985-91) same speakers.

Both have straight versions available 1961B and 1966B. This cabs made what was known as a 'mini stack'.

1961 cabs were for use with the 3315 amp

1966 for the 3210 and 3203 amps

what are those?
3210 MOSFET 100W amp available 1984-91
3315 Full size solid state amp 150W 1988-1991

Thanks for the Marshall history lesson, Simon.

Any idea what the difference in tone might be (in general terms, of course) between:

A) 1936

and...

B) 1961/66A

...assuming the same speakers? Would teh latter have more punch with a slightly bigger cab?

Well...

I currently have two Mesa 2x12s (which are a similar shape to the 1936 cabs) and that works for me over my previous set up of a Marshall 1960AV.

I used to have a 1936 and did like it but felt that I needed a 4x12 (and an angled one) for gigging as you can hear it easier on stage.

I have heard both cabs 1936 and 1966 and out of the two I would go for the 1966 with out changing the speakers as I should be able to hear myself better.

If I was changing the speakers to Celestion V30s then I would also go for the angled 2x12s.

In terms of tone or punch I couldnt really discern much difference between the 1936 and 1966 BUT I have never heard the two side by side.

but as I say the angled 2x12 might be more apparent because of the angled speaker.

Ultimately it is up to you of course

Thanks Simon...that's helpful. I was kind of leaning toward the 1966 style because of the slant. Oh yes, the real trick is getting a side-side comparison!
