Marshall JMP-1 vs. ADA MP-1

I've never played an ADA but I have JMP-1. What do you think is better? I've heard good thing about the MP-1 and was wondering if replacing the Marshall with the ADA would be an upgrade or downgrade. I would gain a good chunk of money for a new guitar if I went for the MP-1. What do you think I should do.

They're different. The ADA is brighter I think, and quite a bit crunchier/chunkier. But it's so cheap if you can find one used, I wouldn't even bother changing from one to the other, I'd get both. Then, if you decide you don't need one you can sell it off.

While you're looking, check out the SansAmp PSA-1. Unlike the others, there's no tubes. The goofy thing is, it sounds MORE "like tubes" than the others...IMO.

I wanted to trade out preamps so i could get a new guitar as soon as possible. I know the ADA has tubes and the Marshall actually solid state. I figured I'd be better off switching.

I have used both but it was many years ago. I absolutely loved some of the sounds of the Marshall but I just could not get a good clean sound out of it. The ADA had much more tonal variation and got a great clean sound. If I remember correctly, the clean channel also had a compressor that was very nice. The ADA also had more gain than the Marshall. Like I said, I used the ADA MP-1 for years and was very happy with it. I even had an MP-2 which was even more flexible. The Marshall was a great unit, but it could not get as much gain or as nice a clean sound as the ADA and I only had it for about 6 months.

For what it's worth...

buy the MP-1, try them both and sell the one you like the less.
you'll find the MP-1 pretty cheap, oddly.

I really like the JMP1, and if I go the rack route it will more than likely be the JMP.

However I really would like to try the Sansamp too, just to see if Jester's right.

I've heard great things about it more than once.

The signal goes through a tube but is created by transistors

Technically, signal is created by a magnetic field being excited by a vibrating string. Transistors merely amplify the signal. The same topology used in ADA MP1 and Rocktron Piranha, and most of the other lower price range preamps. Egnater IE4 and M4, Randall RM4, Bogner Fish, Mesa Triaxis, CAE 3+ are another story. They use tubes throughout their amplification path.

It's been a long time since I've even touched an ADA product. Didn't the ADA require a proprietary cable to use a foot controller with it or could a MIDI controller be used. I just remember a nightmare of one of my former coworkers in my retail days trying to get this special cable for a guy but I dont 100% remember what model it was for. That was how we found out that ADA went under (the hard way). No one had bothered to inform us. This was about 5 years ago or so.

Nope standard midi cable works teh ADA.

The ADA has two clean settings Solid State and Tube
It has one dist which is tube.

If I remember correctlt only teh solid state channel has compression on it.

There are two gain settings for each 'chanel'

ADA MP-1's are cool but then again I dislike Marshalls

I just got an MP-1 off of e-bay (with the midi controller)-it's great!! It took a little getting used to when programming, I didn't have a book, I found a website that is all about ADA-it has the manuals, mods, etc...
