Marshall JPM1 and TC electronics G Force

I want to buy a totaly new amp setup. Today I play trough a JCM800 with GT5 and tube factor (h&k). I can't get the ideal sustain and tone. Is the combination JPM1 and the G force a good combination with a Marshall tube power amp?

I can't comment on the G Force as I've never tried one, but I do use the Marshall stuff you mention. My set-up is a JMP-1, 20/20 power amp and 1960A cab. I find there is enough sustain without having to use additional pedals etc. As far as effects go I have an MPX-G2 which I run both in-front of and in the effects loop of the JMP-1. The effects sound great through the stereo amp set-up, so I assume the G Force would also sound good.

The 20/20 through a 4x12 is also a lot louder than you might think as well. I have the volumes on the pre and power amps set to about 1/3 and it easily competes with a drummer in a rehearsal situation. It's a good set-up and not TOO expensive so I'd say go for it

The G force is pretty much the best you're gonna get effects wise. For a lot less cash you can get the G-Major which is also a great unit. Awesome reverbs and delays...not quite as sophisticated as the G-Force but at 1/3 the price it's hard to overlook.

Unless you are playing huge venues unmiked, a 20 watt stereo power amp is plenty of juice. The mesa 20/20 is punishingly loud and built to last forever.

So the JPM1 with a 20/20 poweramp is enough. Perfect, because I don't like too heavy amps because you can't use them at home.
So for the effects a less complicated rack like the major must fit. Honestly I am not fond of programming...I want to play!

Hi,

I am running my signal through a Boss GX700, the JMP-1 and the Marshall 20/20 into two 1x12" Cabs (Hughes&Kettner). The "wiring" comparable to Vings: First into the GX700 (for things like Compressor, Wah) than the JMP-1 back into the GX700 (Chorus, Delay). Disadvantage: it takes something off the tone of the preamp. Nevertheless, I like the sound I get and with my MIDI-Pedal (Roland FC-200) I can perfectly control the whole stuff live.

You should be able to get all units used (the Boss only used, lately I saw the combination of the Boss and the Roland for 400 Euros (less than 400 $)). Disadvantage on the 20/20: you cannot run just one side / there is no bridged-mode.

As for ideal sustain and tone: since it's a matter of taste you must test the stuff yourself.

Programming the GX700: I find it easy... once you got into the stuff. You get one switch for each effect the rest goes by a multi-purpose dial and two buttons.

Bye,
Lenny

2 jemke: You got him wrong. When he said "punishingly loud" he meant exactly that. 20 watts per side is enough to blow the windows out. Unfortunately, tube amp manufacturers do not recognize the need for low-power poweramps. Bedroom volumes end at 1-1.5 watts.

What are equivalents for the JPM1 from Marshall? Maybe the old ADA preamp?
I don' t want to have a head like JCM900 because you can't combine it with an effectrack. I want to change the valve preamp and the effects simultaneous.

The ADA MP1 is a great amp. It was used by Nuno Bettencourt and Kirk Hammet for years. They have a tube overdrive and a tube clean channel as well as a solid state clean channel which sounds amazing. Full MIDI control too so you can link to your processor and change amp settings and effects together. Have a look on e-bay. There are always a few going on there and you can pick them up for next to nothing these days.

A buddy used to play one of these in conjunction with a Marshall 2 x 20w power amp, BBE sonic maximiser and Lexicon effects unit. It sounded fantastic. Dead easy to get that tight, focused "Nuno" tone.

I have the JMP-1 and a Rocktron Pirhana - I run them through a G-Major into a Mesa 20/20 and a couple Mesa 1x12s (a wide body and a recto)... Anyway, I love the JMP-1 so I just can't convince myself to let it go, but everytime I put it back in the rack I feel like I'm missing something - and I find that something as soon as I swap it out for the Pirhana... They both sound great, especially as you wind up the wick, but the Pirhana just has a little something extra - more air or body or ahhhh! something! that's hard to explain but instantly audible when you campare the two side by side... The clean sounds - especially - are harmonically richer and fuller with the Pirhana (especially if you use the empty effects loop as a gain boost like I do!)... Anyway, you might want to look at a Pirhana as well, but honestly you can't go too far wrong with any of the three (JMP-1, MP-1, Pirhana) - they'll all do the job for you!
