Marshall MG series

Hi!

I've been thinking of buying a Marshall MG30DFX practice amp, it sounds great in the store, but its a new series! Any pros or cons on these amps?

Thanks

The Marshall stuff is okay, but you're essentially paying for the name.

Check out one of the Ibanez TB-series amps (TB25 or TB50). Similar controls, similar tone, similar size....but a lot cheaper. :-)

Forum-member Carlo won a TB25 at Jemfest last year. Fits in his dorm room quite well, and provides the volume he needs to *not* piss off his roommates. LOL Headphone jack helps too.

Do yourself a favor and check them out next time you're in the store.

Get an older Valvestate 10. IMHO the best bedroom amp (well after the Lead 12 microstack!) . Sadly, its the only one I have lol. It's made in England, while the new are made in India, I believe. You should be able to pick a valvestate 10 for next to nothing.

I still have yet to try a DFX series amp. The response to them has been great from what I've heard and they seem to sell out really fast. It'll probably sound great compared to other practice amps since it has a 10" speaker in it. If you'd like something smaller, there is also a 15-watter in the DFX line, too.

You can get a solid state randall rh200 head for 400$ bucks. If youve got a cab even just one speaker go for it its a good enough deal and youll be halfway to a half stack

Well I decided to buy the the Marshall, so far I love it, plus the price was competive with other brands. Its "a little big amp"! Thanks for the input.

the ibanez toneblasters are cool i've tried the Marshall MG series, essentiaslly, these 2 amps sound similar. yup you are paying more for the 'Marshall' brand name especially so when the MG is made in India. however, you get a better speaker with that price- Celestion.

Actually, the MG series are made in Korea...at least mine is! The Celestion speaker is only found in the 12 inch 50 watt plus amps. My 30 watter has a 10 inch "custom voiced" Marshall which I was told by the salesman wasn't a celestion, but it still kicks A. I realy enjoy this amp and for $300 CAD...the price is right! This amp is replacing an old Randall Commander 1 (which kept blowing) with a 15" Electro voice speaker. Call me crazy but I much prefer the Marshall.

good amp choice, the new Marshall MG range is not bad at all! US models made in Korea, Europe (240V) models in India so you are both right Celestion or not, it doesn't really matter since the Celestions used in the MG range all use weaker magnets and shouldn't be too different.

i tried the MG30DFX at the store when I was looking for a smal amp a few weeks back, very nice (yes I agree, very similar to the Ibanez Toneblaster line) but I went with the AVT20 instead because it was built better [/url]

I heard a dude playing through one of those MG amps at Harris Music in P'cola one time. I remember it having a sparkling clean tone.

Anyhow, my practice amp is one of those little Crate Vintage Club amps. At 15 watts, you can crank it a little and get some delicious EL-84 grease goin' on. It's also been extremely reliable which seems to be contrary to many players experience with Crate. It's an early production model with the cream tolex and it was like $400 retail (nobody pays retail anymore ). I'd definitely recommend one for practice.

Anyhoo, good luck with your MG. It's always fun to get new toys.
