Re: Marshall Tube Amps

cheers Rastachild, yup your right i've never used a tubeamp before, I do recall people mentioning before that a higher wattage tube amp at low volume wouldnt sound as good as a lower wattage tube amp played louder. So thats a good point, hmm.

Now there is the TSL602 60Watt option for £588 i've found on a site, maybe thats more appropriate.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

Ibateur, yeah I dont want to go too low just in case I do get into band situations again, as the peavey bandit at 80Watt did the trick but a friend on his 30watt amp did struggle.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

How would you play a head without a cabinet?

If you are going to spend the money on a Marshall, I'd look at Splawn. They are probably out of your range, but they are what a hot-rodded Marshall *SHOULD* sound like, IMO.

And don't get too hung up on the low-wattage vs. high-wattage thing. 30w, 50w, 100w will all be loud. They mainly differ in headroom and bass response. With 100 watts, I get a little tighter bass. When I put it on 50w, the amp breaks up a tad more easily, but at the expense of a tight low-end. It's all give-and-take.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

lol i'm gonna continue to get ripped about the Head comment, ah live and learn

£700 is kinda the top end I want to spend, the TSL602 60watter at £588 is much more appealing and with whats been said the 100Watt model isn't needed for me.

So if bass is breaking up at the 50watt level it sounds like 60watt should be fine for the level I'll be playing it, plus it will still cater for band situations if i do pursue that again.

all info is welcome so please keep it coming, thanks for everyones speedy response

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

a 100w amp is not twice as loud as a 50w amp. 50 is still way to loud to be cranked at home. i have a class a 15W Vox and you can not crank it past 6. As long as you have a master volume you are good. and they do sound good at low volumes.

after the JVM my second choice would be a vintage modern.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

I'd be going the 50watt Vintage Modern combo. I'd love to get my hands on one of those after hearing Paul Gilbert play one live. He also said that it sounds great at low volumes, not far off the sound it gets turned right up.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

My picks would be the DSL (I have a DSL50 head) or the Vintage Modern combo, as LonePhantom says. I finally tried one a few weeks ago and it was amazing. But the DSL50 can achieve similar sounds - not identical, but close enough that I'll hold on to my DSL50.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

JCM2000 DSL w/ BBE Sonic Maximizer in the loop.

I ran that when I was gigging. 100watt head though. Too loud for bedroom volumes. The combo with the BBE would sound brilliant.

Richard- the 602 is a perfect combo 60 watt all tube Marshall that you will love.
You can play it in the bedroom or on stage. Master volume keeps the overall volume down.

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

so Lone and petie go with the 2266C 50watt vintage, well its in a price range quite similar to the TSL602 though that has 3 channels to play with and the 2266C has the one channel (with foot toggle 2 range option).

wilch idea of the DSL401 ( i assume you mean that one as according to marshall site thats the only combo one) comes in around £100 cheaper, its 40watts though, though am sure that still packs a hell of a punch.

I'm still leaning towatds the TSL602.. cheers everyone though, keep em coming lol

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

I heard nothing but good things about Marshall amps and then when I tried some out, I was really disappointed. The older Marshalls may have been good but there was a certain sound that was always there in every head I tried at the store that had a sort of "tin" sound like resonance from a tin can was mixed in somehow. Go on youtube and look at other amps but if you find clips of a Marshall that's you like, then get it. Just keep an open mind and look around .

Re: Marshall Tube Amps

Just to let you know, I've got a 30 watt Laney VC30 combo, and it's PLENTY loud enough for home use. A 50/60 watt Marshall tube combo will shake your windows if you pump the volume up. If possible, look for an amp with switchable output wattage or a master volume knob, 'cause you will need it with 50 tube watts.

If you didn't know, tube amps generally sound much louder than the equivalent wattage solid state amps. I used to own a Peavey Bandit, and I think the Laney VC30 actually sounds louder.

As for different brands, there are plenty of great amps on the market, and if you are willing to think about others beside Marshall, imho the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, the Peavey Classic 30 and the Laney VC30 are all great alternatives.

I hope you find something you like, good luck.

Rock on!
