Mesa 20/20 - Loud enough?

Hey there, merry christmas!. Im just about to start getting the bits together to make my first rack system..

Samson PB power cond.
Triaxis preamp
G Major Effects
Mesa 20/20 (with any luck!)
..and 2 rack space's for system expansion

Ive been looking at a mesa 20/20 to use as the power amp in my rack as from what Ive read its a good quality option within my price range that'll do the job well. Up till now Ive been using a 100w head for live gigs, although Ive never had to turn it up at a gig past about 10-11 O' Clock im just a little worried about the mesa 20/20 being loud enough for pubs and clubs in a hard rock situation. Anyone have experience with it?

Im really looking forward to having a less powerful rig, 100w is just too much for home use and even when gigging its rarley needed.

cheers, chris.

I ran one for a while - don't worry, the 20/20 is seriously loud, more than loud enough for a pub gig. It doesnt have the huge bottom end that a bigger poweramp will have, but for what you need it for, it'll be perfect.

Thanks for the replies guys, that's put my mind at rest for now (I think lol). I am sad to hear it won't have the huge bottom end not that my style really call's for it lol, but y'know. don't worry tho, im just in the market for a rock/shred tone not extreme scooped metal lol.. well not usually

cheers, chris

Re: Mesa 20/20 - Loud enough?

I have a 50/50 which I run a lot in Lo position (15watts) to push the tubes a bit more. So for practices Im now about at level 5-6 which is pretty loud with preamp at about the same (5-6), when I run it at Hi (50watts) im only on level 3. This pushing two 4 x 12 cabs. Its just great to be able run in Stereo.. I makes such a difference.

Re: Mesa 20/20 - Loud enough?

I've done some national shows with touring bands. most all the guitar players I've seen used 1x12 combos. non of them relyed on the amp to monitor their own sound. even petrucci runs his volume very low. anyone giggin should be using in'ears. I know its fun to have a crankin amp. but even rehersals you use a PA for the singer. the band should be in the PA even then. drummers play loud, they will at least fatigue your ears, but more likely damage them. in ears are not expensive. you run the mic on your cab through your transmiter on the way to the PA. then you also get a mix back from the PA. so you have full control over your level as well as the band in your 'ears'. this way you will never again say you couldn't hear your self no matter where you are on stage. also, you will hear the whole band and it will sound like a CD playing in your ears. you won't have ringing when its all over, you won't have damaged ears, you'll hear yourself perfectly. and it cost about the same as a 4x12 cab. by the way. you'll only be mic'ing one speaker, so theres no need for more than one. A lot of PA's are not run stereo in the house mix. so counting on having stereo imaging isn't always going to work.

that said. I know its darn cool to have crankin 4x12's. I had a whole boogie set up with Strategy 400 pwr amp, MKIII, and 2 4x12's. it would rip your head off. but it is expensive and completely unnecessary. when I was doing pro shows. it was a fender hotrod combo most the time.

I had the exact same setup a few years back. 20W is TOO loud. Remember that human hearing is logarithmic. 100W is only twice as loud as 10W if you stand close to the sound source.
