mESA Boogie Dual Rectifier Gain problem?

I just bought a used Dual Rectifier. I believe it's 1999 model. 2 channel. looked to be in REALLY good condition, but...

I'm getting a buzzing/hissing sound when I turn up the gain on the crunch channel (2nd channel).

Is this normal? Or did I get screwed over?

Any information will help. Thanks guys.

If you need further information, I'll be happy to answer any questions. Thanks again.

What kind of buzz or hiss. The amp is really high gain and is not going to be quiet. If it is really loud or even noticeable well you are playing. You may what to try changing out the tubes. So you say it is a two channel well does the first channel also make this noise when you have it set to clone the second? I would assume that it does. What were you playing on before this are you familiar with tube amps? Anyway I would say even if it is not a tube thing and you got it for a good price just have a tech look. I like the old two channel rectos so much more then the threes.

I'm not sure. I figured it was a normal thing, but I just wanted to make sure.

You're right...I'm not that familiar with tube amps. I used to play out of a Line 6 Spider II 210 combo amp. That thing was pretty silent no matter how much gain I had on it...that's why I was wondering...that and I've never really bought any equipment used before.

Yeah, I'd been really looking into this head and reading up on it and such. A guy was selling this for $1100 in awesome condition it looked liked...so I just had to bite on the deal. I just wanted to make sure that this was a normal thing.

I'll try raising the gain on the 1st channel (clean)...I don't think I tried that.

Re: mESA Boogie Dual Rectifier Gain problem?

it should be normal
try not to stay too close to the amp

and any noisegate will degrade your tonality and sustain
so its time to learn to play with the volume knob

if you use unnecessary overdrive. the boss noise gate is perfect. if you know how to use it, it cuts no tone.

Re: mESA Boogie Dual Rectifier Gain problem?

My dual rec doesn't make all that much noise... It's actually weird how little hiss comes from it. I even had it at work today blaring loud (big industrial building filled with electric motors and fluorescent lights) and it was quieter than the background noise in the place. Get some high quality 12AX7's (I'm a fan of the Sovtek 12AX7LPS) and play around with them in your preamp. Probably V1 or V2.
