Re: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Preamp or Peavey JSX

The JSX is noisy with single coils, like any amp. It does have a noise gate, which sorta works, a little. It seems to roll of the high a bit as a method to control noise. If you are having a problem with noise, A good gate would probably be in order. When I sit in front of the computer, it's alot worse than normal. CRT computer monitors make alot of noise for guitars. Pretty much any high gain setting on an amp is going to have some noise. PA guys have gates so it doesn't come out in the house system when you're giggin. I don't think the JSX is any noisier than any other tube head. But since they added a "noise gate" that's doesn't work great. People will bust on it. I don't use it unless I have to.

Re: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Preamp or Peavey JSX

Some JSX reviews.
http://reviews.harmony-central.com/r...212+Combo/10/1

It's funny, one of the review was from a guy that says he hated it, But read the review, I really suspect that he works for Soldano. Either that or he got a defective amp. Even if you don't like the tone as much as another amps, saying it sucks is either being a jerk, a sucky guitar player, or just immature. Listen to it. It doesn't suck. It just doesn't have the same gain structure as other heads. Some people.

Thx again. Found another great demo of the JSX on you tube. For all around here considering to buy themselves a new amp this could be of help too.

Found some Mesa Boogie Roadster clips:

http://www.guitartest.moonfruit.com/

Liked the Peavey as demonstrated by Darin better both regarding the Clean sound and the High Gain sound (looks to me as the Peavey has a lot more punch than the Roadster).

Whatever came stock. Not sure actually. But I just looked and I can't tell. But I do like that the tube are super easy to change. Big ole open area where the tubes plug in. I would consider trying other tubes though.

I read that it comes with El 34 tubes but that 6L6 GC tubes can be used likewise. Would be interesting to change and here the difference. Besides i think i will go for the same solution as you meaning JSX Head and Carvin legacy 2x12 cabinet.

Re: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Preamp or Peavey JSX

Theres a road king on the bay 260105620412 $2K BIN
I know a guy that uses the Road King and it sound simply enormous. Carl Bell from Fuel. He's a great player, but doesn't play the shredder stuff with Fuel. I dig the heck out of his tone live. I did not demo one before I bought the JSX. I demoed a bunch of other Mesa's. I've owned a few. The Mark 3 was probably the best. I did demo a Mesa Nomad head with EQ before I bought the JSX. It was darn sweet too. I was very close to buying it. It sounded every bit as good as the JSX, cept in the clean dept. It was $1100 used. I talked to a guy that used to carry Mesa's, He said there was alot of Nomads coming back for repairs. Not sure why just that one amp, but it steered me away from that. I played a Nomad Combo without EQ. I HATED it. It sounded like a cheap junky amp. It was used and it could have needed tubes for all I know. I have nothing against Boogie. I would buy another one if it was what I wanted. But for the price, you aren't going to beat the JSX, new with warranty for under $1000 US. Again, there's are lots of great amps out there. But at the moment I have a JSX, so I can only really give you my opinion on the JSX, which I dig.

Here's a some songs I recorded with the Mark3 back in 1990. *warning* I played in a Christian band, so if you are offended by Christian lyrics, jump right to the guitar solo. 1st song is Christina, solo is at 2:57 2nd song is Make Up Your Mind and solo is at 2:07. And open Arms solo at 2:38. Lonely Lover short solo from 1:30 to 1:45, longer solo at 2:54. Yep, it's all got to much reverb, I know. But, it's pretty good guitar tone actually. I had nothing to do with the recording process back then, I would have mixed it differently. And I play considerably better now. But there ya go for reference. I am not singing on any of the tracks.

If you only listen to one of them, check out Make Up Your Mind.

The Legacy cab is light weight compared to alot of other 2x12 cabs. Plus it has the v30's I insist on playing though.

Re: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Preamp or Peavey JSX

Hei Darin, thx a lot for giving me the opportunity to listen to those soundclips with the Mark 4. Yes it sounds like a Mesa. But i don`t think thats what i am looking for?!? I think its lacking a little bit of the call it "punch" the JSX has,- judged from the soundclips. As written before it sounds to me (also judged from the soundclips which i send in my last thread- the Roadster clips) that you don`t get that high gain sound that forces you to take on your seatbelts and hardhat, (as for example can be heard in the film 300 by Tyler Bates: Fever dreams). MAybe i am wrong? Do you consider the Roadster/Roadking a better Amp regarding reproduction of those Ultra high gain sounds and Vai, Satriani, Ray Vaughn, Malmsteen sounds with regard to versatility compared to the JSX? Sorry long sentence maybe a little bit confusing but i hope you get the message! Or with other words would you prefer the Roadster/ king if you had the money and wanted a maksimum versatile amp with the option for Ultra High gain sounds?

Re: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Preamp or Peavey JSX

It's a Mark 3 actually.

But would I buy a Road King? Um, I would have to play one. I suppose I might. Some of the Boogies have a more saturated gain than the JSX. If you are looking for silky smooth saturation, the JSX is a little off the Boogie there. Think Petrucci, then think Satch.

Re: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Preamp or Peavey JSX

Hmm. i could get the Mesa Boogie Roadster Rectifier Combo for 2550 Euro versus 2300 for the JSX head and Carvin 2x12 combo. I can\t check them out before buying. So?
But again thanks a lot for the incredible help- you should get payed for this- really very kind!!
