Question

Metal Rig (Help me build!)

I currently own an '87 Randall RG 80 ES. But i am looking for a bit more versatility.

Ok, I am looking for a tone that extends from:
Ozzy "No More Tears"--->AIC "Facelift"--->BlackLabelSociety--->Metallica "Master"-"Black Album" -->Pantera (althought I realize SS Dime sound won't be really attainable with tubes).

Option 1: OD-->EQ-->Legacy (Or X100B)-->Randal Jaguar Cabs

Option 2: Preamp-->TS100(or other somewhat inexpensive poweramp)-->Randall Jaguar Cabs
(I've been thinking about Peavey Rockmaster, Rocktron Voodu, ADA MP...)

Open to ALL advice/criticisms.

Dimebag used Kranks, not sure which model, but their site will tell you.

And I wouldn't personally go for the Legacy, as the bands you listed (BLS, Metallica, Ozzy) is aiming towards more of a Marshall/Mesa territory. Maybe Engle?

What in particular is lacking on your Randall?

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

dime didn't REALLY use kranks....he used Randalls. His sig model was still pretty much under production at his death, sure he had "made the switch" but he didn't really get much use out of it.

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

Actually he only used the RG100ES/HT (MM-CFH, GSTK) and Century II (VDOP-FBD, 101Proof-RTS) heads. Warheads were on stage but apparently never used. And he definitely never used the Krank.
Reason I bought the head. Nothing lacking. Just not versatile.

My band's sound is looking to go a bit outside of the Pantera box. Incorporating heavy grunge, and possibly power/prog/more melodic stuff.
Mainly more tube sound.

Check out the Blackstar Series One amps, nice heavy sounding tube amps with the ability to dial in US or UK tones, or anywhere in between.

+1 on that.....those amps do sounds great and they are fairly inexpensive. However metal rig....id have to say something like that Bugera 1990 Classic 120w...its made to sound similar to the Marshall 900 series and its a valve amp so theirs where you'll get that "tube" sound.....its fairly affordable i mean it goes for $450 on musicians friend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFv-VBRrtlA

This is the review that sold it for me....plus youll be able to get the BLS,Dime,Ozzy sound out of this thing....i suggest you use the eq in the effects loop and the od in the direct signal path...that should be good....But then again thats just my opinion and a humble on at that.....

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

Metal? AWESOME!!!

I suggest checking out some Peavey stuff! They can get real high gain without the real high price. Check out the 5150 (you see the combo version of this amp going on craigslist for $500 in atlanta and greenville,sc all the time). Or the XXX which is almost the same amp as the new 3120. Put a TS9 in front to boost for solos and ta-da you got some great versatility.
Check out the Peavey ULTRA head also.. they're great amps that are older and much cheaper.

If you want to go the carvin route, the V3 will probably be a better choice than the legacy for metal stuff.

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

Yeah, the 5150 is a staple amp. Too bad they dont make them anymore, Eddie went all rogue or whatever. The newer 6505 line is supposed to be "the same" but I'm not so sure...

Well, this guy is apparently playing straight into a Legacy.. Hm

Anyone have a consensus on ADA MP's?
Peavey Rockmaster?
Rocktron Voodu Valve?

Dude!!!, Keep your Randall RG80ES!, But Run Your Randall "CLEAN", And Try the New "All Analog" "MXR Fullbore Metal" Distorton Pedal INSTEAD! This Metal Pedal REALLY SOUND's RIPPING!, and So Responsive! w/ Really Wide Mids Control, Plus!, It Has Its Own Internal Noise Gate! For "Full On", BETTER than Randall & Dimebag Solid State Grindage. I mean, all the tones/bands you describe and mention, can be had with this pedal!, plus another cool trick is using a Boss LS-2 Line Selector Pedal and Setting it up for Two Overdrives/Distortions, One on Loop A, the other on Loop B, that way you just set em' Up exactly the way You want. Say Your'e using the Line 6 Uber Metal Pedal, on Pulverize, (Which Sounds Fantastic!), as your Main Rhythm Tone, on Loop A, and your using the MXR Fullbore Metal as Your Lead/Solo Tone, on Loop B! and then you just run em' Full On and just toggle between them with your Boss LS-2 Line Selector Pedal.and Obviously You can Set your Solo Tone Louder, & different Mids, than your Rhythm Tone, to Really Stand Out with this kind of Set up!

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

Just get a 5150/6505, Peavey XXX, ENGL, Mesa. 6L6 Hi gain amps, then buy a maxon 808 or a Ibanez Ts-9

I have the XXX and it's pretty metal

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

I like the pedal idea. Satch plays his amps pretty clean and gets the dirt through pedals for the most part.

Mind you the dirty channels on the JSX are pretty gnarly.

Especially if you like the Randal, cheaper to get some pedals and tweak the tone.

I have a Peavey Vypyr which I like but haven't played in any big rooms with, mine's all solid state but there are 60 and 100 watt versions with tube power amps in them that could be an option if you want modelling. Again I haven't heard one played in any sort of venue so can't comment on how they scale.

I've heard a lot of guys bring stuff to a pub jam that they think sounds fantastic in the bedroom but sounds all thin and nasty one you crank it with other instruments.

Cheers,
Shane

Re: Metal Rig (Help me build!)

The idea of getting a Maxon or a Ts-9 with a hi gain amp is getting a tighter sound, you must use the overdrive of your pedal turned down with the tone knob hi on your dirty channel

Check out the Blackstar HT-Venue series then. the 100watt head should be in your ball park budget. If there's not enough gain just add an overdrive pedal.

Check out official demos I've compiled on my blog.
