Morley Bad Horsie Wah

Calling all Morley Bad Horsie Wah users!

What do you guys think of this peddle? Much more of a wah sound than a cry baby?

And most important of all, is the volume boost acually good enough to be heard when doing a solo?

Why is that? I'm getting fed up with the hard toe down switch on the crybabys to be honest. I used the 95Q and loved it as its auto switchless.
But I noticed Vai's wah is more of a broader wah than the crybaby.

Re: Morley Bad Horsie Wah

I have a cheapo £60 Crybaby and a Morley Bad Horsie 2 and i actually end up using the Crybaby more.

I only really ever use the Morley when i want quick sounds or to add a "vocal" sound to solos. Also when i hit a pinched harmonic i'll hit it down quickly to boost it treble wise. Other then that, i actually use my Crybaby alot more just because it sounds more like a wah i guess.

The Morley is alot more subtle IMO.

Re: Morley Bad Horsie Wah

Another reason I want a switchless auto bypass wah is so that I can be more spontaneous. I get fed up with having to push my toe down hard to switch on and toe down hard again to switch off. Its effort that takes the feeling away from the music in the fretboard when the effort has to go elsewhere.

Yeah definatly, that's a good side to the pedal which i love.

Bad side is that when you want it on lower settings (like having a crybaby with heel back) the pedal turns itself off. Pain in the arse as you have to get it JUST between on and off otherwise it switches off and you don't have that nasal tone. It sort of gives your foot cramps

Which is why i often prefer Crybaby wah for longer passages and the Morley for adding colour into solos.

Crybaby works better for me. It can be easily modified to match desired tone range (I did it on mine)

All I want it is for solos anyway, which brings me back to the volume boost, as without a boost, a solo is often hard to hear, so is the boost good enough on the Morely or even the crybaby 95q?

Bah, nonsense.

I used to think the very same thing.

I *had* a Bad Horsie 1, and a Crybaby Classic. I really prefer the sound of the Crybaby, it seems to have more bark and scream, if you know what I mean. The Bad Horsie is really smooth and subtle sounding. The Crybaby is really in your face and has a serious attitude problem. Think "The Audience Is Listening" by Steve Vai. THAT is the attitude im talking about. The morley is really smooth and cant grab that same sort of 'tude.

The Switchless feature appealed to me (it appeals to alot of people) because I was a previous original Crybaby GCB-95 owner, and got tired of the switch.

But, now that I've been down both roads, Ive decided that I like the Crybaby's dramatic WAH! bark more than the smooth subtle Morley Bad Horsie, which I gave to a friend of mine.

Back to the switch issue, I've found that if you have the Crybaby set up right, with the switch at the right height, its no problem at all to get it to turn on. My old GCB-95 was difficult, because I didnt have it set up right. My new GCB-95F was setup right from the factory. If you want, you can adjust the switch and make it higher so it doesnt take much force at all to turn it on. The switch doesnt bother me anymore, it doesnt take much to turn it on, and it doesnt stop my groove either, I can do it without really thinking about it.

I think what did it for me, was the intro to "Yankee Rose" by Steve Vai/David Lee Roth. I sat my two wahs, the morley and crybaby Classic, side by side, and tried making vocal noises with both. The Morley was too smooth and didnt have the high end shrillness to really pull it off well. The Crybaby nailed it on the first try, it has the quick attack and extended highend that the morley doesnt have.

Also, you can't leave a morley half ****ed.(EDIT: LOL! C-O-C-K-E-D) It just turns off when you step off. With the crybaby, you can leave it in the middle for interesting midrange honks like the scorpions crew. I love that feature.

Re: Morley Bad Horsie Wah

I fully agree with your comments. I always find a better response on my Crybaby GCB-95 when I want to hear my guitar talk. The Bad horsie is a nice wah but IMO doesn't have the that "serious attitude problem" you mentioned about the Crybaby. BTW, I never think it that way before but its a nice description!

Re: Morley Bad Horsie Wah

Well how come steve vai's wah sounds are the best i've heard? more 'waaaaaah' than the cry babys sort of 'wah'

Also I want to know about the volume boost on the morleys and the crybaby 95q and 535q, is it enough for a solo considering that solos need that boost to be heard? I know i've asked a few times, but no ones said anything about it.

Re: Morley Bad Horsie Wah

If the morley was the best wah pedal in the world, and everyone had that same opinion then nobody would have a crybaby...

Well, its just my opinion about it. I think we all know it's based on your taste. In my case its just because It fits with my style but Mr. Vai is much much much better than me and he can do amazing things on a Bad Horsie that I can't ever dream on. The point is to share what is your opinion about two great pedals based on your experience.
