Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

The Gmajor is a good piece of gear for that price range. You could save some money and buy a Rocktron Xpression too.

Digi gear is ok, but I think there is better out there for the same price.

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

i'm using the Digitech 2120 rack, and i can get killer tones with that.
also i have my sweeeeet Korg A4 Guitar and a cheap Behringer GDI-21.
and i'm still thinking about to buy a complete stomboxes set:

*BOSS DS-1 Japan or Keeley mod
*BOSS overdrive (for boost)
*BOSS Chorus Emsemble CE-5
*BOSS Digital Delay DD-3 or
DL-4 Line6
*BOSS Tremolo or Flanger

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

Stompboxes are best if you're main sound is reliant not on a mountain of effects, and more guitar ---> amp ---> speaker kind of set up. Just a few to cover all the basics, reverb, wah, boost, noise gate, etc.

Multi effects aren't just best, but are necessary if you really really like your effects. After all, you don't want to turn into this guy:

Thumbs up

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

I have tons of gear - Roland GP-10, Vox ToneLab SE (awesome by the way), TC G-System, Digitech GNX3 - and about 30 or so BOSS / Boutique pedals.

I've gone back and forth but I recently got tired of tap dancing so I got the G-System and I'm pretty set on that now. Awesome box - coupled with the AmpGizmo and my Mark IV - super setup.

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

Haha! That pic is ridiculous. He needs an Axe FX and could probably get 3 or 4 by selling off half of those pedals.
For myself, I like individual effects. I feel like multi's get out-dated whereas stomp boxes, while new and better ones may come out, aren't as quickly replaced. However, if you want a lot of effects for cheap, there's nothing wrong with a multi or the tones they can give you. It would keep you on your budget and get you the effects you want. That said, you'll want a floorboard controller for any rack device if you intend to jam or gig with other people. I'd look at the GSP1101 from Digitech or the stuff already mentioned by others.
As for the floor multis, I really wouldn't look at anything below the Tonelab or Zoom G9.2.tt and would probably be more interested in the GT-10 (especially if you have a decent amp already) or the Digitech stuff. Pods aren't bad but they never really did it for me personally (tonally subjective statement clause applies here).
I know those are beyond your $300 budget new, but I feel like they will be better built, offer you more and better effects, and not be as quickly replaced by the next generation of hobbyist multi-effects than something that's $100-200.

Those high-end multieffects pedalboards are amazing, but they have a lot effects that I will probably never use. And they are "big" and expensive. I'll probably buy one of them in the future (a distant future :P). I just need something to create my own patches and to improve my tone (if that is possible), and small enough to be taken to band rehearsals.

I still haven't read any POD reviews. I'll do it these days. If none of them convince me, I'll get the Zoom G21u. Thanks everybody for your opinions!!

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

Just bought my Gt-10 and after playing with it for only 30 mins I can see the potential it has. and to comment about the fact that pedals you can tweak your sound instantly, well the GT-10 has thought of that also. no matter what patch your on, you have 4 knobs just like on any pedal that you can bend down and tweak at any time you like, so not to shabby

Pedals are fun and so a floor effects boards, just depends on what you decide to experiment with...

Like Freak said, you can tweak anything in the presets you like and save/write them to a program and name for your own personal preference, like a rackmount unit. Also, you can go manual in a program, IE, turn on/off effects just like stompboxes in any program. I have a Boss GT-6, works great for what it was intended for, but I love my Eventide Eclipse! Just way more flexible, only problem is, to bounce around programs and effects, you need a MIDI board. I also run effects on the floor as well, just a different tone you get, it's all up to YOU!!
Let your ears tell you what YOU like! If you only have $300 to spend, you could find a good used multi-effects unit out there to suit your needs!!
Everyone has their own opinion which suits their own tastes, IE, sound, find whats right for you!

Peace!

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

I have a Zoom G2.1u -- awesome multieffects pedal for the money. I'd say that or the new Vox Tonelab ST would do the trick nicely if you don't want to spring for say a Rocktron Xpression and a midi foot controller of some kind. Haven't tried the new ST but, I have the original Tonelab and a Valvetronix AD6VTX 1X12 combo that I like very much.

Re: Multieffects vs. Stompboxes

well look at satch and vai both use a mix. lord knows vai loves his eventide and i don't think anyone has ever said he sounds bad. same with satch they both use what they need to get a sound. personally i have trimmed way down for live playing. i have a EB wah, fulltone gt500, analog delay and the 5150 combo. but i also have a boss gt10 that i use in the recording room to keep the 5150 quiet
