As a lot of you know, I've made a LOT of amp threads in the past about ENGL's and EVH's and Peavey's and I was just stuck. I needed a three channel amp with independent EQ for all three channels. I needed good cleans, a clear but full crunch and a tight but brutal gain section. Well, I found it.

Also, the tubes came to me packaged OUTSIDE of the amp. In a seperate box! Why didn't they just put them in? It was as easy as pushing a button. It was already switched to 6L6 too.

You want E34L's though. They're more aggressive than EL34's and have more headroom (less chance of burning them out). Tighter, more pronounced low end too.........

Will they rebias in my head? Because it auto-biasses itself. But only for 6L6's and EL34's.

EL34's and E34L's are nearly the same tubes in the same family. The XXX can be manually biased too........no problem.

It's not auto bias, the switch only puts it "in the ballpark" and swaps some component values. There's still a bias pot that should be adjusted when you change tubes(even of the same type).

They packaged the tubes separately because they can easily break in shipping when installed.

Great choice! Looks to be a first run/edition of the XXX since it has the old Peavey block lettering. Saying that, I would not use JJ E34L's in that amp as the early XXX and JSX amps only came with 100 ohm screen grid resistors and those particular tubes require a minimum 700 ohm rated resistors. Yous may have the 700, but without a tech looking it's hard to say.

You will be plenty satisfied with regular EL34's. That amp has lot's of thump and grind using 6L6's or EL34's.
I use EL34's in my JSX and it sound great, keeps up with my ENGL and 6505 just fine with regards to gain, punch and lowend.

I recommend using the loose setting on the back, as the amp is really sharp and aggressive sounding naturally. If you use the medium or tight settings, the amp's tone will get sterile, thin and solid state sounding. So, set it to loose and start eqing from there. You may like the medium setting, but see for yourself.

I'm actually on the loose setting. You're completely right too. Medium sounded alright but Tight wasn't for me. And the loose setting is almost as tight as the tight setting. But more open sounding.

This is a seriously great head. Kills my friends 6505+.
