Need a New Cab

Which cab, 4x12, is best for the price? I'd prefer if it had Vintage 30s in it or some sort of Celestions. The Carvin 4x12 I have now only has a 100W capacity and that's not really good with a 150W Mesa head. Is there any way to rewire the cab so that it can handle 150W or more?

If not, I'm looking for something that I can get for selling my current cab plus adding around $200-300.

Re: Need a New Cab

AKMG,

If the cabinet you have says 100 watts that means you have 4 25 watt speakers. Rewiring your cabinet will only change the ohm rating of the cab. (Ohms are just a way to rate DC resistance and that will not change the way your cabinet sounds.) Sadly you will have to change speakers or get a new cabinet. Port City is coming out with a 4x12 Wave and it will blow you away.

If you like the sound of your cabinet you may just want to change out the speakers. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new cab. It just depends what you want to do. I do have access to speakers so if you are interested you can pm me. Thanks.

I've seen nothing but good reviews on the Genz Benz stuff, especially used, you can get a great deal on the G-flex series.
Mesa stuff holds it's value pretty well, so you won't see too many bargain prices on them.
One cab I was impressed with the amount of low end was the B-52 from Peavey. I'm not normally a fan, but they had some fatness to them.

Another option too, if you have the time and inclination, find a nice heavy cab and put your own drivers in. I did that with an old set of Fender Ohmaha's I rescued from an old bandmaster cab that was headed for the trash.

I dropped 'em in a birch cab I got on **** for $125, wired em up so the cab would run stereo/ mono and I have to say, this cab is pretty darn nice.

Or, like PCM said, buy some different drivers to stock your existsing cab with, and save some time. You'll be able to flip the original speakers I'm sure.

Let us know what you do.

Yeah the B-52 caught my eye. It's relatively cheap compared to other cabs out there and it got really high ratings. I might go with that or see if I can find a discount on a 1960 Lead.

Re: Need a New Cab

If you didn't pay extra for Celestion 25 Watt Greenbacks then your Carvin cabinet will handle more than 100 watts. My Carvin 4x12 has Celestion 70's in it, and easily handles the X-100B to volumes that rattle all my furniture. Before you do any large scale spending or shopping take a look at the speakers and see what they are, exactly. And, if you don't mind my asking, what in the world are you doing pushing full power on a 150 Watt Mesa head?! I'm kidding you, because it sounds like a monster setup. Is that a Mark III Coliseum head or something?

Re: Need a New Cab

AKMG,

Trust Daniel on the Wave 4x12 from Porty City Amps. if you haven't already found one you should really shoot for that. Easily the best designed cabinet I have ever seen. its not open back like mesa cabs. its actually contoured to scoop out all the sound produced by the speakers and then ported all across the bottom of the cab to give you an ubeliavable amount of volume. it will be louder than anything you are thinking about... I would bet money. Its my next purchase.
