Personally, I think solid state Crates are only good for tuning (using the clean channel) *Other than that, it would be an insult to your guitar to play it thru that.
I wont elbaorate any further because that's not what this discussion is about.
I would go for either the Line 6 or the Marshall.

In order to make the right decission play the line 6 dry (no effects) and then go play the marshall (also dry). *The one that sounds best to you at that point is the one to go with. *That sound will be your base sound / tone. *Any effect that you add will just be icing on the cake. *

Yeah I agree with GP,
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *Play both amps 'dry' so that you're not swayed by the effects of the Line 6. I think you'll find the more authentic tones coming from the Marshall and more versatility in the Line 6 amp.

* * * * * * * * * * * If you're planning on cranking your amp to 11 then I think you'll be happier with the Marshall. Just keep in mind that I'm a total Marshall geek/freak and an utter tube-snob so I'm slightly biased (pun intended).

Don't waste your time with a solid-state Marshall.

I used to have a fair amount to say on this subject. Then I finally realized that what I like for tone and gain is unlike what most prefer, so my perspective is out in space somewhere and probably won't help.

However, I agree that comparing different rigs side by side is the best way to find what you personally like. My ears get, how should I say, "jaded" to tone if I listen to one amp long enough. Then I plug into a different one and find that perhaps the first one wasn't all that great after all.

I guess I still do have a fair amount to say about it after all.

Personalmente,

saludes.

Drop the chalupa!
I would play the Line 6 and the Marshall side by side first. * If you don't want to spend extra $$$ on outboard gear but like effects, the line 6 is the way to go. *I don't really like Marshall but I really don't like Crate. *If you want a bit more power and possibly a more versatile setup, save some more money and get the Marshall and a Line 6 pod.
My opinion on the Line 6 stuff is this. *It's great stuff for what it is. *You get ton's of effects and they all sound good. *I feel they sound about 80% - 90% accurate. *That's really good for any amp that has that many options. *To get 100% sound of something you will only get it by building that same setup. *For versatility in a single package I don't think you'll beat the Line 6 for the money.
On another amp choice, recently at Axe music, I was waiting for a sales dude and I got kind of bored so I picked up a DBK that was on the wall and went into the amp room. *No-one was in there so I found an amp that was plugged in and started to play. *Well, this amp sounded great for a little amp! *It was the new Peavey Bandit 112 and it was the best sounding Peavey amp I've ever heard. *Quite versatile for an amp without a processor too. *The best part was it was only $550 Canadian brand new! (about $360US). *I thought maybe the pickups in the DBK had something to do with it so I also tried a ESP (LTD), a Parker Fly deluxe, an American Strat, a PRS McCarty model, an RG550, and a couple cheapo wanna-be Ibanez's called "Phil" guitars. *They all sounded great through it. *I'm not a Peavey fan but this amp is starting to change my views a little bit. *Maybe this one was a freak too but I damn near bought it for a little practice amp.
Good luck finding the new amp!
Jeremy

If the line 6 spider has the rectified, modern hi-gain and POD layer models I'd go for that.

Guitar techniques tabbed Die to live and added the settings for the sound *which they done on a POD. Very close. And previously I thought the soldano settings were crap.

Plus you get your marshall sounds too.

I vote for the line 6 but you would need to play it and see if you dig it.
