Need NOOB help with amp (Roland Cube 30x):

My question/problem has more to do with my being a complete noob to the world of electric guitars and amps than the particular brand. Can anyone help me understand the basic function/purpose of some of these built-in features on my amp? Not having had any formal lessons yet, and having started my learning on an acoustic guitar, some aspects of my new electric guitar (RG20th) and amp (Cube30x) are still a mystery to me.

My amp includes the following...

Effects:
Delay, Reverb, Flanger, Phaser, Chorus

Channels:
Clean and Lead

How should I go about learning where to adjust the amp settings to to achieve ____ sound? Are there some very basic guidelines out there? For example, if you want a Metallica like sound, use lots of _____. For that Van Halen tone, use less ____ and more ____?

if u want a hard rock/metal sound, use the lead channel, no effects, gain pretty jacked. for an EVH tone, use less gain.

i used to have one of these... for the best sound.. (depending on your pickups).. amp : metal. gain 3:00 bass 12:00 mid 12:00 treb 2:00 delay at its longest setting.
