new amp???
hi, im looking at getting a new amp, i play mostly prog so i want to be able to go from soaring distorted his to beautifull clean tones with reverb, delay, mod watever. would it be a good idea to just get something like a solid state line 6 hd 147 head or go for a valve amp and run a pod xt pro through it???? or any other advice on what i could do would be appreciated like mabey even the H&K switchblade????.
thanks, pete.

Re: new amp???
Depends on your budget, and you're gigging situation, but i'd say that nothing beats a great
tube amp
. Sounds like something such as a carvin legacy would do you fine. One thing i can say is don't compromise the main tone of the amp just because one comes with delay and other built in effects. You can always add those later. You must first start off with a great sounding amp. I'm sure some other guys can recommend some amps also...
Before they do you may want to make another post and include:
1. Your budget
2. What you are using the amp for
3. What brands are available in your country

Re: new amp???
Built in effects(other than
spring reverb
)are usually no good. They usually just have a speed control, allowing no control over the effect. $2000US is a lot to spend on an amp though. Do a search and you should come up with a list of some good amps. I like
Mesa Boogie
, but I understand they aren't for everyone(they're tweakers amps).

Re: new amp???
With that budget I would be looking at the H&K stuff, SwitchBlade would be sweet.

Re: new amp???
In my tone-quest...
-Legacy : Owned one, really tremendous good clean, but forget about "soaring distortion" on it's lead channel. Besides that It's a rather mid-oriented amp, I don't know what kind of lead/distortion tone you're after. You might need some extra pedal work if you want high gain.
-Switchblade : Tested one several times as I was seriously thinking of getting one. User-wise it's the best I've ever seen in a tube amp. 4 voicing, 128 midi presets (signal path is analog !). Every knob can be saved in memory. 4 voivings. it's like a rack preamp. perfect if you daon't want to be stuck on stage with just the channel switching ability of your amp. It's high gain channel is rather soring distortion, but it has a specific kinda tone you have to like, H&K tone I guess ;-)
you might wanna have a look at a Carvin V3, I would like to hear one. But again, a lot depends on what kinda distortion you're after.
You just have to test the amps you might consider, it's the only way to be more or less shure.
Good luck

The Switchblade is exactly what I was thinking.
If you like the Line 6 stuff, the HD147 would be a good choice.
But, don't buy a tube amp just to plug a POD into, if that is what you are thinking, go with the HD147.

Re: new amp???
I've always been a die-hard Marshall guy. Still am.
I primarily use JCM2000-series stuff. You really can't go wrong with a TSL or DSL 100. I'm really jonesing for the new stuff that was just introed at NAMM. The JVM and the Vintage Modern series.
