New amp suggestions

So I've had a Marshall MG100DFX for a good while now and I'm ready for something new. I think I'm going to go for a higher end amp with a good clean sound and then start using pedals for everything else.

The guitar shops where I live only really have Marshalls and Fender amps so I don't have much of a selection. I'm not against ordering off the internet, I'd just like to try be able to try the amp first.

Mesa Boogies seem interesting to me but I've never been able to try one or anything.

I play mostly metal and progressive rock, but I play some more stuff like modern rock, blues, jazz, and classic rock. All I really care about is a nice quality amp with a good clean sound around about 100watts. Doesn't matter if it's a tube amp or not either.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I'd like to stay under $1000 but it doesn't really matter as long as it's worth it and not completely overpriced.

Are you looking for a combo or head and cab? To be a really good amp that is versatile in all the styles you mention for under a $1000, I'd probably try to find one with a good clean channel that also takes pedals well and then use pedals to get a lot of the tonal variability.

I play a Peavey JSX 120 watt through an Orange 2x12 close-back. Over the 30 plus years of playing guitar through all kinds of rigs, this mating pair is freaking amazing. The clean channel of the JSX is one of the best I've heard. I gone down the Budda, Bogner, Matchless road. The JSX combined with the Orange cab takes the cake. Just my two-cents.

smooth55: That is what I'm planning to do. All I really want from this amp is a nice clean channel and then stack pedals for what I want on top of that. And at this point I think I'd rather aim for a head/cab.

Swing for the fences in that price range and see if you can pick up a used JSX head. It'll be the clean channel for pedals that you want and can easily handle any metal/prog/modern-hard rock/blues/etc. that you throw at it. They go on the bay for 750-900 all the time.

Peavey, Fender, Carvin, Egnater all have wonderful combo amps that fall well within your budget.

You don't need 100 watts or even a separate head/cabinet.

If you can get a chance to try one of these, I think you will be more than satisfied. Covers plenty of tonal ground, and will not break the bank.

Peavey Classic 30 combo might be the best bet.

Re: New amp suggestions

I also have a JSX and recommend it. Sounds fantastic through V30's.

If you can't pick one up, look into the Peavey 3120 which goes for $1100 new. Or the same amp, in it's earlier form which is the XXX. $600-$800 used.

Another option is the Mesa Single Rectifier which goes for between $800-$1000 used.
