New Peavy?

Ok, hate my TSL, so, looking at Peavey.

Oh yea would love a Boogie, but I'm not spending that!

So which Peavey will rock me out?

6505? (did that replace the 5150?)

or Valve King?

or to go three channel, JSX?

or Triple XXX?

or XXL?

And any other suggestions to a TSL alternative at around the same price as the TSL and those Peavey's

Thanks guys!

Re: New Peavy?

Try the Krank Revolution, VHT Deliverance, Hughes and Kettner Warp X, and the Genz Benz El Diablo.

BTW, replace *************** with musicians friend. (one word)

Decide for yourself what amp suits your needs. To hear some sound clips of amps go Here.

Re: New Peavy?

My college (BIMM) owns the JSX that Satch used on the G3 tour and it doesn't sound that amazing to be truely honest. It's a love/hate relationship. Some people in my class love the amp, some hate it.

Personally, i think it sounds way to sterile and a bit of a waste of money if you want the Satch sound (He doesn't really use the lead/crunch channels so far as i know, just the clean with a DS-1). There's no reverb on it so that's probably why i wasn't a big fan of it. Mabye it was the noise gate that was killing the tone for me, but i'm not a big fan of it. I found that the Crunch channel sooped up was better then the Lead channel and you can always buy a reverb rack/pedal to get good reverb

By all means, try it, you might like it, but don't just order one on hearsay because it is sort of a love/hate amp. The marmite of the amplifier world

6505 sounds like the best option if you're sticking to Peavey's only because it's pretty versatile and can do lots of tones. You'd probably want to go for the 6505+ though so you're not limited to one tone setting on all channels.

Another idea would be to go down the secondhand route. There's a couple of Marshall anniversary (the blue heads) going on Epay. They're really great heads. Satch used them alot before he moved to Peavey so it may be worth looking at them. They're like the TSL's except more reliable i guess. You could get them for around the same or prehaps less then the price of a new TSL100.

Just a few ideas though

+1 for the anniversary heads. I have 2 (a 6100 and a 6100LM). The clean is excellent, which is unusual for a Marshall, channel 2 has all the classic Marshall sounds, and channel 3 has silly ammounts of gain if that's your thing. It took me a long time to get a decent tone out of channel 3 mind you, it's one of those channels that can sound bad very easily.

Re: New Peavy?

JSX all the way, the most versatile amp i've ever played and it sounds fantastic (looks great too).

Try everything you can though, but definately look into the JSX.

I wonder how Joe Satriani gets a good tone and is happy with it from using a DS-1 through the clean channel? I've got a DS-1, but its still true to the form that distortion pedals sound thin and compressed and lack the tonal qualities of overdriven valves.

No. Dont. It terrible. Any high gain amp the same price as it ****s all over that piece of crap. Thin, buzzy, fizzy, solid state sounding disotortion.

I would get a used Mesa/Boogie. You can get a Mark III head for around 750 used. Very awesome amps. Or a Mark IV for around 1000.

If not, a 5150 would suffice.

That's because Joe does not use his DS-1 through the clean channel anymore. All his distortion now comes from the amp. Joe used his DS-1 on the clean channel when he was with Marshall.

Just to clear that up

Grr.

Re: New Peavy?

The JSX sounds very appealing. I'd look at that first. Cleans like a Classic 50, distortion of a XXX...

Yeah actually, i watched the G3 DVD last night and he's definatly using the amp's distortion because it's sort of fizzy like the JSX.
