nylon strings

i have an aj 307 ce nt, the acoustic seven string. i've been thinking of putting nylon strings on it, so i can get closer to the sound of a classical guitar. does anyone know of any nylon strings that would fit it? also, what guage should i use for the seventh string?

thanks,
Bennett

Nylon strings may not sound very good on a guitar designed for steel strings. That said, you may be able to find ball-end nylon strings that may get you at least a little closer. However, you'll need to get your nut re-slotted to accommodate the wider nylon strings.

As far as a 7th string goes, that might be more difficult. What i would do is find out the gauge differential between the 5th and 6th strings, then add that to the 6th string gauge to get an approximation of where you should be for the 7th string.

Good luck! I'm sure many people will be interested to know how it turns out.

I don't recommend doing that to the guitar. You need to keep the tension that you sould normally have on with steel strings. If you do that you might have some serious neck problems on your hands. Also, you can kiss the lifetime warranty goodbye if you were to use nylon strings on a steel string guitar

Nylon strings have much lower tension than steel strings when tuned to pitch. Lowering tension on a neck won't cause significant problems, in my opinion... nothing a truss rod adjustment can't fix. Doing the opposite, however, is a recipe for disaster.

yeah, i figured there would be the issue of lower tension on the neck. i would think adjusting the truss rod would do the trick.

i just looked at http://juststrings.com and they have la bella seven string classical guitar sets. i think i'll go ahead and order a set and put the balls on the ends myself. i figure, whats the worst that could happen? (i just got the horrible immage of my bridge popping off and hitting me in the eye...) i've got a spare set of steel strings i can put on if it comes down to it. i'll be sure to report on how it turns out.
